Exams and Next Steps

For most Year 12 students, this week marks the start of the formal end of year VCE exam period. Our hope for all students is that they complete the year satisfied that they have given their best and whatever the final results may be, that they are ready to face the next chapter of their lives.

Exams can be a stressful time and parents are encouraged to find the ways to best support their young person whilst helping them to keep everything in perspective. Some useful suggestions can be found here on the ReachOut website.

Beyond Secondary School there are many options available for students to consider as well as university/higher education. These include:

  • Apprenticeships or Traineeships – see the Career News Compass Newsfeed for a recent vacany list from MEGT. Other Apprenticeship Centres have similar listings that students can register for – see this link.
  • For the last couple of years, the State Government has been supporting skill development in key areas through the Free TAFE program. Opportunities here include many Pre-Apprenticeships as well as areas such as hospitality, horticulture, community services, education and health, eg. Diploma of Nursing, Cert IV in Cybersecurity.
  • Gap Year – value add to a gap year! Many students need time to explore what is next for them but a gap year doesn’t need to be limited to work. Consider an overseas experience, volunteering (eg. Lattitude), or incorporating a short course or TAFE certificate to build skills and experiences to prepare for future work and study.
  • Work – some employers are prepared to train on the job with some offering positions with training in areas such as Dental Nursing, IT, Retail, Administration and Business. Be organised (update your resume and research some potential employers) and pro-active about seeking these out (cold call, phone, email).

Whatever students are considering, they are encouraged to contact the Careers Centre for advice or support as needed. Phone or email to make an appointment.

Regardless of what students may decide, I wish them well as they contemplate ‘who they want to be’ and not just ‘what they want to do’.
