YEAR 3 VISIT THE YARRA VALLEY

By Cathleen Barker (Head of Junior School)

Excitement was in the air as the Year 3’s arrived at school on Monday, August 22nd with anticipation of their first “proper” excursion in quite some time!  Not only were we headed out of the school, but we were headed to the Yarra Valley Chocolaterie and Ice Creamery.

“Charlie and the Chocolate Factory", by Roald Dahl has been our literacy focus this term. We have explored and unpacked the story filled with wonderful descriptive language that inspires imagination. What better way to have a tangible chocolate experience than to head out to the Chocolaterie and have an experience at creating our own chocolate design and learn about cacao beans grown here in Australia and the other ingredients used to make the smooth and creamy chocolate we all find so delectable.

Throughout our wondrous experience at the Chocolaterie, we were very pleased not to lose anyone up a chocolate pipe or have anyone blow up into a giant blueberry or shrink into a miniature version of themselves.  No, every single Year 3 was returned to school, safe and sound with a giant, individually decorated chocolate to share with their families. A day to remember!

ROBOTICS IN JUNIOR SCHOOL

By Adam Messenger (Learning Enrichment Coordinator)

Some of our students in Years 3 and 4 have been using Lego Wedo 2.0 to explore coding. Following a design process, students first develop an understanding of the components and building blocks, then move to exploring and trialling prototypes, then making adjustments and refining their creation.

Students have experimented with motion and tilt sensors, making a motor work at different speeds and directions, adding light and sound - and all the while combining it with the joy of building with Lego!
