Social and Emotional Learning

Update of SEL at St Anne's

At St Anne's we draw on a number of programs and models to assist us in explicitly teaching social and emotional skills that are then drawn on to assist children in their everyday experiences and interactions with others. You will have read in our newsletter and heard us talk about The Berry Street Education Model, Bounce Back Program, Peaceful Kids, Zones of Regulation and The Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships to name a few. We are always complimenting these with programs experiences like Kids ROAR and the NED Show we had today.

The Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships (RRRR) teaching and learning resources have been developed to support schools to develop student knowledge, understanding and skills to build and manage safe and respectful relationships. The RRRR framework provides us with 8 topics for focus on and teach at an age appropriate level across the school. The 8 topics are

1. Emotional Literacy: Emotional literacy can be defined as the ability to understand

   ourselves and other people.

2.Personal Strengths: Children and young people need a vocabulary to help them                     recognise and understand strengths and positive qualities in themselves and others.

3. Positive Coping Strategies: Learning activities in this topic provide opportunities for

students to identify and discuss different types of coping strategies.

4. Problem Solving: Problem-solving skills are an important part of the coping repertoire.

5. Stress Management: Activities within this topic have an explicit focus on teaching positive approaches to stress management.

6. Help Seeking: When to seek help is explored and who our trusted adults are.

7. Gender Identity: Assist students to challenge stereotypes and critique the influence of gender stereotypes on attitudes and behaviour. Focus on the importance of respect within relationships.

8. Positive Gender relations: Develop the skills needed to solve problems, set boundaries within relationships, and play an active role within the prevention of family violence.

Having spent much of the year focused on areas covered in topic 1-6 we will explore topic 7 and 8 in the coming months. All Catholic schools are mandated to teach all 8 areas. Teachers will keep you informed of the learning through Learning Links newsletters that are sent home fortnightly.
