Careers Exploration & Work Experience

An important part of what school is all about, is preparing students for the next  step - life beyond school.  While research suggests that teenagers today will experience 17 different jobs across 5 different careers in their lifetime, having an idea of pathways and opportunities is necessary for that ‘first step’ beyond school. As such, we try to offer students insights into different career opportunities and pathways through a number of avenues:

The Careers Department

This is an online platform that showcases 800+ pieces of industry and course content that can show your child all of the options on offer to them post-high school. The digital program is a touchpoint for our students to not only experience different industries, but to see these industries in action and to learn from their professionals. We use this quite often in our Careers Education at Years 9 and 10, as well as in STEM and PD.

Work Experience

This is generally conducted for Year 10 students but this year has also included Year 11. This provides an opportunity for students to be placed in an actual work environment of interest to them. Work experience has been taking place this week with students at a  variety of  locations not only in Warrnambool, but also Melbourne and Hamilton.  Some of the industries our students are at include aviation, education, digital media and trades such as plumbing, carpentry and painting, among many others.

Guest Speakers/Presenters

We like to take any opportunities available to have industry representatives come and  speak to our students. We recently had members from the ADF (Australian Defence Force) and local Reserves come and speak to us about career prospects in the ADF. We have also had the opportunity for Amy Briggs, representing the Hospitality Industry, and Chris Cavill from Bunnings Trade, come in to speak with our Year 9 students about careers that can begin with part time work as High School students. We look forward to welcoming other guests from different industries throughout Term 4.

Year 7 Beach Clean Up

In English, Year 7 have been studying ocean pollution for their recent persuasive essay. As a fitting way to end the unit and consolidate their learning, the class took part in a clean up at Levi's beach. Many examples of microplastics such as nurdles were found as well as some larger items like fishing rope. As a class, our finds will be reported to the Warrnambool Beach Patrol to track pollution on our beaches.

Year 9 City Experience

On Wednesday and Thursday this week, the Year 9 students travelled to Melbourne to further investigate the issue of homelessness and disadvantage. They arrived safely and went on a street art tour around Flinders Street. They also completed tours and workshops from Melbourne City Mission, The Big Issue Classroom and Blender Studios to compliment their studies in English and learn more about the homelessness crisis.

Year 9 Barista Training

Over the last two weeks, the Year 9 students have had the opportunity to complete their barista training at school, overseen by the wonderful SWTAFE trainer Hayley. She was most impressed with their skill at frothing and pulling beautiful Coffee shots. The students learned the process of making a few Coffee types and then were able to put the theory into practice by creating Coffees for willing guinea pigs (aka school staff) who were all gladly caffeinated to satisfaction.

Year 9/10 French

The Year 9 and 10 French students made Croque Monsieur's and Croque Madame's last week. A traditional French cheese and ham toastie with bechamel sauce. Mrs. Burgess walked past at the right time and got to sample our creations!
