Learning, growing and celebrating together...
Dear Sacred Heart Kew Families,
We all love a Dad joke. Don’t we? Most people know one or two of these. If your child has ever been taught by Mr Millane, they may know a few more than one or two...
If you’ve ever been lucky enough to have a Dad, you know that these people can have a profound effect upon your life. They are so much more than an encyclopedia of jokes. For most of us they are our heroes and stars, who can do anything, just like in the book ‘What does your daddy do? By Gordon Reece & Vilma Cencic.
In this book, Tina and her school friends have all sorts of ideas about their Dad...
One day my mummy found me crying in my room ‘What’s wrong, Tina?’ she asked.
‘Today in class,’ I sobbed, ‘Miss Jones asked us all, “What does your daddy do?”
‘Ranjit said, “My dad’s an actor on TV!”
“My dad’s a rock star!” shouted Peter
“That’s nothing,” said Julie, “my dad’s a famous judge.”
“Oh, yeah?” cried Johnny. “Well, my dad’s a General in the Army!”
“My dad’s a brilliant heart surgeon, “ said little Melissa.
“I beat you all,” crowed Emma. “My dad’s the Captain of the Australian soccer team!”
‘Then Miss Jones asked me - “What does your daddy do, Tina?”
“Er - er - he’s an astronaut,” I said.
“No, he’s not, Miss!” shouted all the other children. “He sweeps the streets and empties the bins - that’s what Tina’s dad does!”
Mummy sat beside me and gave me a cuddle. ‘Why doesn’t my daddy do something important?’ I asked.
‘But he does’ said Mummy. ‘Let me see…’
‘He does silly things to make you laugh…’
‘He plays games with you till way past your bedtime…’
‘He tickles your feet till you beg him to stop…’
‘He listens for hours to all your tall stories…’
‘He reads to you at bedtime…’
‘He checks on you, last thing at night to make sure you’re okay…’
‘He does all these things because he loves you, and that’s the most important job in the world!’
Just then I heard Daddy’s key in the door…
And I ran and gave him a great big hug!
‘What’s that for?’ he asked.
‘For being the best daddy in the whole wide world!’
I remember once telling some other kids that my Dad was one of the Three Amigos! I am sure that we can all recall a time where we ‘overstated’ our Dad’s job or ability. I wonder who your Dad was or is? It really doesn’t matter what your dad did or does. We love them no matter what.
Happy Father’s Day on Sunday to all the Sacred Heart Kew Dad’s in our community, and to all those who play a fatherly role in our lives. Thank you for being our heroes and stars. We also remember our beautiful Dad's who are no longer with us in this life, but whose memories remain with us every single day. Thank you for enriching our lives, imparting upon us life long lessons and for making us the people we are today. You will never be forgotten, as you live on, in us, each and every day.
And lastly, I leave you with a Dad joke from Mr Millane.
Did you hear about the restaurant on the moon? Great food, no atmosphere...
Wishing all school community members a lovely weekend. Enjoy the first week of the Finals. May your team be in front at the final siren. Enjoy a Dad joke or two.
Kind Regards,
Ed Weekes
