Book Week News

Book Week Dress-Up Day

Tomorrow, Friday 26th August, is our Book Week Dress-Up Day and we are looking forward to seeing what wonderful book-themed outfits everyone comes to school in.

We will have a parade as part of our whole-school assembly in the morning. Please note that the plan is for this assembly to be held outside, as the PFA will be setting up the Father's Day Stall in the hall. Should the weather not allow an outdoor assembly, we will advise the community of alternate arrangements via Compass in the morning.

If students choose not to dress up in Book Week outfits, they are to wear school uniform. This is not a fundraiser and no gold coin donation is necessary.

2022 CBCA Short-listed Book Read Alouds

The whole school has been joining Alison's  Webex Room each day this week at lunch eating time to hear some of our middle and senior school students read a selection of this year's Children's Book Council of Australia (CBCA) short-listed books.  These are books which have been nominated for the 2022 Australian Children's Book of the Year.

This is always a fun Book Week activity, and allows all students to experience these wonderful books during Book Week.  Many thanks to the students who read the books aloud - Leah H, Emily S, Kate C, Milla W, Ryan L, Ella K, Torres L, Parmiss N and Jordan R. This is quite a daunting experience, and they all accomplished it with confidence and ease.

For those people who may be interested, the 2022 CBCA Book of the Year Awards were held last Friday 19th August.  There are several categories of book judged each year; of those most relevant to primary school-aged readers, the following books were the winners:

Book of the Year for Early Childhood (Entries in this category are appropriate in style and content for children who are at pre-reading or early stages of reading).

Winner - Jetty Jumping, written by Andrea Roweill and illustrated by Hannah Sommerville

Picture Book of the Year (Entries in this category are outstanding books of the Picture Book genre)

Winner - Iceberg, illustrated by Jess Racklyeft and text by Claire Saxby

Book of the Year for Younger Readers (Entries in this category are appropriate in style and content for readers from the middle to upper primary years).

Winner- A Glasshouse of Stars, written by Shirley Marr

Scholastic Book Fair

Thank you to the Scoresby PS community for your support of our Scholastic Book Fair this week.  We hope you all enjoy your lovely purchases.

The funds raised through book sales at the Book Fair represent a significant commission for our school, which enable us to add to our school’s library  book collection.  We were able to add over $1000 worth of books to our Library this year as a result of Book Fair sales - for all students to enjoy for many years to come!

This event would not be possible without assistance and I would like to thank Scoresby PS Integration Aides Jenny Clarke, Julie Harris and Tracey Raymer for their invaluable help during the Book Fair.  Thank you also to Tina Clark and Raelene Davis in the office for their important assistance in making the Book Fair run as smoothly as possible.

Whole-School Shared Reading Time

On Monday afternoon, the whole school celebrated Book Week, and the joy of reading to others, in our multi-age shared reading time.  Students were divided into groups of mixed year levels and all brought along a favourite book to read to another person.  It was delightful to see not only the enjoyment of reading and books during this time, but the camaraderie of students engaging with others they would not usually mix with.  It was a terrific way to kick off our Book Week celebrations!
