Year 5/6 News

Science Week Activities

On Monday 15th of August, the 5/6 students participated in some special Science Week activities. The first activity was simulating a rain cloud. We did this by filling a glass jar with water and shaving cream and then dripping food colouring into the shaving cream. We had to record how many drops of food dye it took for it to come through to the water.

The second activity was creating fireworks in a jar by using water and oil. Oil is hydrophobic, meaning that it stays on the top of the water. We found out that when you put the drops of food colouring in it, it stays in drop form and then after a few seconds it creates a cool fireworks effect and looks incredible.

The last activity was making kaleidoscopes. We folded mirror paper into a cardboard roll and stuck a bendy straw and a circle of patterns on the end of it.

Science Week Incursion - The ScienTwits

As part of National Science Week, all of Scoresby Primary School took part in an incredibly funny incursion. It started with just Sam talking about how bad John was. John appeared to be pretending to be a guy named Phillip - it was quite funny. They were going to make elephant toothpaste but failed (miserably). It was a very noisy experience, and we hope to do it again. John kept joking around, while Sam actually tried to teach us something to do with science. You could tell they were comedy people. There was also a BIG RED BUTT ON that shot Phillip into space. At one point Sam had enough and tried to teach John about H2O2 (the chemical). He gave John some cardboard letters that were H O H O, and tried to explain to John the difference between H2O and H2O2. John held up O H H when at the H2O part, and O H O H at the H2O2 part. That was our favourite part!

Write A Book In A Day

On the 17th of August, 5 students participated in Write A Book In A Day. Jonelle, Joel, Kate, Jordan and I (Emily) came together from 8.00am – 8.00pm to create a book for some kids in a hospital with cancer.

We had a 2,500-word limit, 5 random words to include in our book, 2 characters that we needed to create, a non-human character, an issue, and a setting already set for us. All of us wrote at least 1 chapter, and we all managed to get at least one picture included.

It was a really fun experience for us all and, as the first SPS group to do it, we would definitely encourage students to participate next year. Through all the panic and chaos that we encountered on the way, we managed to (tiredly) finish the book. With 10 chapters written, and about 23 pictures drawn, we confirmed that we had completed the book at 7.54pm. It was a very pressure-inducing 12 hours, but we completed the book perfectly.

Year 5 'Day of Learning' at Scoresby Secondary College

On Thursday 18th August, all of the Year 5s went to Scoresby Secondary College for a very special ‘Day of Learning’. This was to show us what it will be like to go to high school.

We had so much fun. We participated in three lessons. These were: Music, Science, and Design and Technology. We met some of the staff and they were all super nice and friendly.  In Music, we learnt where different music comes from and about different beats in music. In Science, we learnt about acids and bases and found out that sometimes they can be neutral. In Design and Technology, we made a coaster for special people in our lives. We used a saw to cut it and then we sanded it and then used a hot pen to engrave it.

We would like to say a special thanks to Miss Phibbs from Scoresby Secondary College for organising the whole day.
