From Our School Leaders

We always say that Term 3 is a quieter term in schools, and we think that’s why we pack in a lot of the extras in this term. It’s also the term we celebrate a few special “weeks”. We have had quite a few events beyond the classroom this term, and it has created such good learning and opportunities for our students.

National Science Week: "Glass - More Than Meets The Eye"

Last week we celebrated National Science Week.  We began the celebrations on Monday, with students participating in a variety of science activities involving the use of glass or mirrors.  Some of the wonderful activities included:

  • making pancakes
  • making lava lamps
  • making kaleidoscopes
  • investigating using magnifying glasses and microscopes.

All the students were engaged in the activities and the science behind them, with the teachers doing an amazing job of preparing and organising the activities.

We finished our National Science Week celebrations on Friday with a whole school incursion by ‘The Scientwits’ who made us all laugh as they completed - and created chaos with - a variety of different science experiments. Science has never been so much fun!

Write A Book In A Day

Wednesday 17th August heralded our inaugural entry into the 'Write a Book in a Day' competition.   The aim of the competition was to write a book for kids in hospital, and transform their day by transporting them to another time, place or even dimension through the power of their imaginative words and pictures!

This competition is also designed as a fun way to help kids with a serious illness, as the funds raised through team sponsorship go towards finding kinder, more effective treatments for childhood cancer.

Our team of five students from Years 5 and 6 (Kate, Jonelle, Emily, Jordan and Joel) had just twelve hours to write and illustrate a book from start to finish. To make it even more fun, they had unique parameters that had to be included in the story.

Our team started at 8.00am where they were given the following parameters:

Primary Character 1.........................Delivery Driver

Primary Character 2.........................Jeweller

Non-human Character:...................Bee

Setting:.................................................Ferry Wharf

Issue:....................................................Surprise party

5 random words to be included...tiptoe, fresh, community, delight and bruised

After much careful planning, editing, illustrating, typing and designing, the book, “Sinking”, was completed at 7.58pm with 2 full minutes to spare.

Well done to Kate, Jonelle, Joel, Jordan, and Emily on twelve hours of hard work and determination.  These amazing students have also managed to raise $1255.00 for the Kids Cancer Project, with sponsorship still open until the 30th September.

Book Week Competition

The SRC is running a 'Design Your Own Front Cover' competition as part of our Book Week celebrations.   We are encouraging students to choose one of their favourite books and design a new front cover for the book.  The front cover can be designed either by hand or digitally and can be handed in to either Mrs Rheumer or the class SRC representative by Thursday 1st September.  Prizes will be awarded at each level for the SRC’s favourite covers.  We can’t wait to see what are talented students come up with.

Kindergarten Visits

Over the past few weeks, Scoresby PS has been out and about visiting, and hosting here at SPS, children from our local kinders.

We have hosted Berrabri Kindergarten and worked with them in our kitchen garden for a morning, planting seeds, seeing our chickens and digging in the garden beds. They really enjoyed a play on our playground at the end of our session too.

We have also visited children at Scoresby Village Childcare. This was during Book Week so our Year 5s read stories to the children and they made a book together.

Thank you to Mrs Maguire for organising the kinder visitations and overseeing the program; it helps make strong community connections for our students and families. Our students are fabulous ambassadors for our school; we are very proud of them, as they always show such lovely care and respect to our visitors.

PFA Cookie Dough Fundraiser

Thank you to the families that supported this new fundraiser. PFA decided to give this a run and see how it went, and it was a very successful fundraiser for our school, raising over $1,800. That’s very impressive!

We hope the community enjoys making and eating the cookies, and this fundraiser will certainly be on the agenda for next year for those who wish to try it next time.

The funds raised will be going towards the new playground which will be situated on the grassed area opposite the shadesail-covered eating area. The playground was ordered last month, and at the moment its delivery date is late December - not ideal, but it’s becoming common. The new playground  is stage one of the project and we are looking to add to it in the coming years.

150th Commemorative Path And Garden

We have finalised the Design-a-Brick order and have 136 named and illustrated bricks ordered.  We had people from near and far buy a brick, and we are absolutely delighted with the community support for this project.

Our gardeners will be here on the first Monday of the school holidays to start the garden works. The plan is that the works will be completed during the term break (fingers crossed) ready for the start of Term 4 and our celebrations happening in November.

Family Maths Night 2022

We will be running our Family Maths night on Wednesday 31st August, from 6.00-7.30pm in our Year 1/2 learning space.  All families are welcome to come and play maths games with their child and learn more about games they can play with their child/ren at home.
