Shade Sails

Following a lengthy delay, we are delighted to announce the commencement of the installation of our new shade sails near the Performing arts centre. The cost of the sails were subsidised by a grant and therefore come at a great saving to the school. Thank you very much to Sarah McDonell for her work on the application of this grant. We look forward to holding our warm weather assemblies and Christmas carols outside without the discomfit of the blinding sun!

Multi-Cultural News

The Multi-Cultural team are busy preparing for our Cultural Day, which I can confirm will be held on Friday 8 September. The team are busy coordinating activities with our class and specialist teachers to ensure we have a variety of activities for students to participate in.  Students will be invited to come along to school in traditional dress that represents their heritage and will have the option to purchase a bento box lunch. More information will be provided closer to the date.

Year 1/2 Parents Morning Tea

On Monday 31 August we are holding a morning tea for parents of year 1/2. This is an opportunity for you to sit and have a chat with Sarah Watkins and myself about all things Solway. I can’t guarantee we will have cake, but if you are free, we would love to have you drop by the conference room and have a cup of tea with us.

Sustainability

Our amazing sustainability team has done it again! Headed by teacher of the year 2022 Sarah DeJong and Brooke Danaher we have retained our 5 Star status. There is a huge amount of work that goes into this accreditation, and it would not be possible without the dedication from the Sustainability team. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Staff Accessibility

At Solway we pride ourselves on our strong partnerships with parents in their child’s education. Teachers are available via email, and for incidental conversations, at the end of the day when they go out into the yard at dismissal. Please note that if the conversation is a bit more involved, the teacher may ask you to arrange another time where the issue can be discussed more thoroughly.

To avoid disruptions to learning time, we ask that if you are dropping your child off during the day, you say goodbye at the office or classroom door and don’t enter the classroom. If you need to get a message to the teacher, please send them an email or inform the office.

Sport

This week many of our Senior girls are busy with all things sport. On Thursday we a group heading off to a girls’ football day, run by the AFL and on Friday our Netball team will be competing at the Division Competition. Good luck girls!

Student Achievement

One of our year 6 students Archer recently participated in a variety of assessments for The Western Australian Gifted and Talented Education Program (GATE). Archer achieved a total standardised score of 246.63, which places him in the top 1.5% of applicants for the GATE. Archer has accepted a place on the GATE program at Shenton College in Perth and will commence there in Term 1 next year. Congratulations to you Archer, this is an amazing achievement, you have a very bright future ahead of you and we look forward to hearing of your accomplishments.

Community Taps

A big thank you to Felicity McGrath (Fundraising Convenor) for organizing the Community Taps evening last week at Two Doors Brewing. Great to see parents from all year levels about and mingling. By all accounts a fun evening was had by all.
