BOOK WEEK AT LNSC and Students write their story

Book Week has come to LNSC and we love to celebrate all things Literacy! This year the Library and English team collaborated on creating a fun and engaging program of events for our students. On August 21st we hosted our annual character dress up day with staff and students joining in the festivities by coming to school in costume. We hosted a magnificent fashion parade at recess with our amazing students strutting their stuff down the catwalk, while their peers cheered on in support of their efforts. A panel of judges made up of students and staff had the tough job of awarding our top 4 best dressed entrants. Congratulations to all those who participated and got into the spirit of Book Week.

During lunchtimes for the week, the library is open and hosting events all week long. On Monday we hosted a trivia competition about all our favourite books, on Tuesday we had acclaimed Australian author Tristan Bancks visit the school and address our year 7/8 students. This was particularly exciting as Tristan is the author of our year 8 text, ‘Two Wolves’. On Wednesday and Thursday we watched book to TV adaptations and engaged our viewing skills and on Friday we celebrated Wear it Purple Day by participating in a colour run and hosting a bookmark making session.

Book Week is such a special time of year to celebrate Australian and world literature and reflect on the impact that storytelling has on our lives.

We’re already looking forward to next year!

Thank you to all staff and students that got involved in these wonderful celebrations.

Hello, I'm Teighan!

Hello, I'm Teighan, and I work in the Library!

At LNSC, our library space is something to be proud of, with a dynamic, inviting space that is equally suitable as a calming retreat for our students, and as a place for events and celebration. More than a place to read, students use the space to suit their own style of relaxation, such as by playing board games, discussing favourite books, or simply chatting openly. Our diverse and varied collection aims to have something for everyone, be it classical literature or brand new graphic novel releases.

Recently, the library celebrated Book Week, with daily events such as competitive book trivia, a scavenger hunt that acted as a fun way to learn the library's cataloguing system, with the highlight being the creative and enthusiastic character dress-up day. Seeing so many people engage with the space and have fun talking about book characters they liked was a wonderful thing, and I saw students I don't normally see attend the library to participate, so I'm hoping it helped even students who wouldn't have otherwise visited the library see its charms, and spread more enthusiasm for the reading culture of our school.

Thanks so much again!💜

Elijah Atina - Year 9A

My name is Elijah Atina and I was born in South Auckland New Zealand. You may have seen some of my creations that I am very proud of. I have both Japanese and New Zealand heritage. To honour my Japanese culture and heritage along with my appreciation of dragon images, I designed and made a Katana which my classmates and teacher liked. There was also a competition to design a branding for the Year 9 Enquire Program polo shirt and my design won. Many of the students said they would never be out of uniform again because they liked the shirt so much. The shirt is black with a Gothic font, "Lalor North 9" on the back and our new school logo on the front. (as modelled by  Mondhel)

Family, school and being creative are the most important things in my life. I want to inspire others to find their talent and learn to let it shine.

Tereapii Julliette Tearea- Yr. 12V, Writes her Story

Peace. Serenity. Contentment. A mixture of all of these creates the unmatched feeling when I'm at the beach, watching the waves gently crash onto each other. Upon the horizon is the sun, a fiery orb, that looks to be gradually receding into the waters below. The sky above consists of many shades of reds, oranges, and yellows. The waters below follow the same effect as it mirrors this phenomenon. The sand below me is as gold as treasure which compliments the glistening waters as it softly hits the tip of my feet. While slowly lying down I let out a sigh of relief, then closed my eyes to listen to my surroundings as it takes me to a place of comfort and peace. I was then called by an unfamiliar voice demanding me to come back. I looked up to see who had called for me and was able to recognise my family resting around the bonfire we set up for camp. As I regretfully stood up I looked back to the beautiful scenery one last time before heading off to my family. All throughout the night we laughed, talked and cried together before heading to sleep. As the night passed by, I dreamed of the beautiful skies and the breathtaking beach.

My name's Tereapii Julliette Tearea and at that time, I'd be 8 years old in the Cook Islands. What I didn't know was that after that moment everything would change.

It’s the next morning and we are packing our belongings. I stalled for a bit considering I didn't want to leave and my parents allowed me a few more minutes before we headed home. I jumped in the back of our truck with my dad and watched the beach getting smaller and smaller as we drove away. Trying to capture as much as i can before it was overrun by the large majestic trees swaying with the gentle breeze. I wave my hands through the wind as the truck moves faster and faster. Watching the magnificent scenery had me falling asleep as it was calming. Then in a blink of an eye, we were home, it was as if time sped up fast forwarding to the time of our arrival. We unpacked the truck and headed inside our house and just like that I ran straight to my bed. The instant comfort was very much needed since we were at the beach for a week. I tried so hard not to give in to the slumber so i stood up to help get the rest of our belongings. We decided to wash our clothes and clean before we could finally rest. Then there I was, back on my bed finally giving into the slumber I needed after a long day. However, I heard my mum telling me something but I was too deep into my sleep.

The next day, I woke up to the sound of my mum yelling at me and brother to get up and to get our clothes and any other belongings packed in our suitcases. I was really confused but then it hit me. I WAS LEAVING. My heart crushed into a thousand pieces as I realized what was happening. I slowly pulled myself out of bed with agony as i didn't want to leave or even think about leaving, but I pulled myself together and started packing. Each time I put my things into my suitcase I felt like crying. I didn't want to leave, I didn't want to say goodbye ....not yet. A few hours later, we were done packing and we cleaned the house, we packed the trucks with our belongings and began to head to the airport. When the engine. started I felt like i was going to break, my eyes were tearing up, my hands were shaking, my heart was breaking and all i could think about was thought of leaving the rest of my family. I couldn't bare this pain but I couldn't show it either because everyone was feeling the same thing. On the way to the airport i watched the trees as it glimmers in the sun and sways with the wind. It looked as if they were dancing and the fresh air complimented the beautiful scenery.

We arrived at the airport and unpacked our suitcases from the back of the truck then waited for our checkout. In the Island of Atiu theres only one airport, which looks like a small shed with tables and seats surrounding it. It's been a couple of hours and it was time to board our flight back home. We knew this moment would come but we couldn't believe it was happening. We each said our goodbyes and boarded the plane. As I sat in my seat, I silently cried my heart out knowing that this may be my last time I'll ever be here. I'll the majestic beaches, tropical smell and my family, but I was ready for change and ready for what will happen for me in the future……
