The loss of the Montevideo Maru is the worst maritime disaster in Australian history and, until this year, the exact location of its final resting place remained a mystery. The Japanese merchant ship was transporting approximately 1,060 prisoners from around 16 countries, including 850 Australian service members, from the former Australian territory of New Guinea to what was then the Japanese-occupied island of Hainan when an American submarine torpedoed and sank the ship – which had not been marked as transporting prisoners of war – on July 1, 1942.Its discovery in April off the coast of the Philippines made headlines around the world. Search Director and Submarine Specialist Captain Roger Turner CEng FIMarEST RN played a pivotal role and, in this Shrine exclusive event, Captain Turner shares his behind-the-scenes insights into the remarkable find.

Learn about the intricacies of maritime archaeology, modern technological advancements in underwater exploration, and the meticulous research that led to the successful identification of the Montevideo Maru.

The talk will be followed by an audience Q&A and light refreshments. This event is free for Shrine Friends* and volunteers using their discount codes.
