2023 Literacy Week

Next week we celebrate and promote Literacy at Mount Alvernia College. As Literacy is essential to success in life, being a socially engaged citizen, and for learning, this is an important week in our calendar. We have planned a week packed with fun and activities to encourage students to value literacy and challenge them to build their capacity in reading and writing. Our theme for 2023 is Stories from the Street. This theme is inspired by the novel Grace Notes, the chosen book for our Read with your Dad event, and encourages students to find their voice, to participate in social and political discourse and to speak up about things they are passionate about. We encourage students to be change makers and strive for a better world and engaging in social discourse is a meaningful way to do this.

Our annual Principal’s Reading Challenge is also launched in Literacy Week. This is an interhouse competition and points are accumulated through combined minutes read by individuals over four weeks. It would be wonderful if parents can encourage extra reading at home over this time.
