COLLEGE CAPTAINS REPORT

Term 3 may have just started but it will be over before you even know. For the year 12’s it's our last official term, so we are nearly there. Time definitely has gone by quite quickly, and looking back we can collectively agree that we wished that someone told us to take the opportunities like production or swimming because once it's over, you don't want to regret not doing something.

As everyone is over half way through the year, its important that no matter how stressful school may become with SAC’s and CAT’s to make sure to show respect and some empathy. For VCE, there is always some heightened emotions when its SAC week, so be understanding and thoughtful, as at some point everyone will experience this.

This term will definitely be busy with many opportunities that everyone can partake in. This term the school will be participating in the Connor’s run. The Connor's Run is a foundation that supports brain cancer especially in children. The school already has a team so sign up and get your friends involved as well. We will also have a school strava which in the spirit of competition, will be a competition between houses.

Details are as follows:

On Sunday 10th September, members of the BSC community will be participating in Connor's run and we would love as many people as possible (students, staff and families) to sign up to run with us. Please use this link to sign up:

https://www.connorsrun.com/join/brightonsecondarycollegecommunity

Additionally, in honour of Connor’s Run, we are conducting some friendly house competition through movement on Strava - you can log walks, jogs, runs or cycles.

We would love all students and teachers to sign up for their house Strava and the BSC Strava (links below).

We will be posting regular updates on the competition and every little helps!

We also encourage all family members and the wider BSC community to get involved through the BSC Strava.

In week 3, there will be a student-directed PEP session, which is focusing on student voice and agency. Please give your honest feedback as we want to make positive changes which are only possible with your input.

Do you remember what I asked you to do in our first assembly at the start of Term 1?

It was about the connection between our international students and local students as one group or a small society at BSC. I'd like to implore you more sincerely to be kind to everyone and let's make our school the most beautiful community, multicultural and harmonious among students, regardless of their race, nationality, and gender.

Fortunately, we have 11 new international students this term, we are sure everyone can empathise that when starting somewhere new it can come with feeling shy and nervous. We want all our fellow students to be respectful and kind to the new students. You can be someone's saviour or hero. How exciting is that?

In the last week of term 2, we kicked off the house competitions with soccer. The atmosphere was absolutely incredible and for both the Junior and Seniors game we had Goldstein as our winner. So congratulations to them, but the competitions will continue so participate and at the end of the year we will see who the overall winners are.

We would like to please bring your attention to the first ever Brighton Secondary College podcast. This is a project that we are really passionate about and would love for our student cohort to be a part of it. If you would like to know more or be part of the podcast team please email us: collegecaptain@brightonsc.vic.edu.au

For just the short amount of time we have all been here this year we have met so many incredible new people, we have seen a new side of the school which makes us proud to say we are from Brighton Secondary College.

We think it's now time we revive the “How good are we” mantra, this slogan was once legendary at this school but has since been losing to the passage of time, we want everyone here to identify one thing they do well and just straight up own it.

Additionally we want everyone to adopt a new mantra “how much better could we be?” we know it doesn't role off the tongue as well but moving forward forward it is just as important to recognise how we could be doing better than it is what we’re good at.

All of us here should aim to be better and aspire to be bold and passionate leaders in a global space. Have you ever wondered what sets great leaders apart from the rest? What makes them stand out and inspire others to follow in their footsteps? Today, we would like to share with you a few key qualities that great leaders have in common.

First and foremost, great leaders possess a clear vision. They have a deep understanding of their goals and objectives, and they can effectively communicate this vision to their peers. A clear vision serves as a guiding light, providing direction and purpose. Great leaders know where they are heading and inspire others to join them on the journey.

Great leaders also possess excellent communication skills. They are skilled listeners who value diverse perspectives and encourage open dialogue. They understand that effective communication is a two-way street, and they actively seek feedback from their team. By fostering a culture of open communication, great leaders build trust and create an environment where everyone feels valued and heard.

What makes a great leaders?  Well demonstrating resilience and perseverance. They understand that setbacks and challenges are inevitable, but they never lose sight of their goals. They see obstacles as opportunities for growth and use them as stepping stones towards success. Great leaders inspire their team to keep pushing forward, even in the face of adversity, and they lead by example, showing unwavering determination and resilience.

Futhermore, great leaders are dedicated to continuous learning and self-improvement. They recognize that leadership is not a destination but a journey of growth and development. They seek out new knowledge, embrace feedback, and constantly strive to enhance their skills. By investing in their own personal and professional growth, great leaders become even more effective in inspiring and guiding others.

All of us here share different passions and outlooks on life, we as a school will be at our greatest potential when band together and compliment each others attributes assuring a world worth living in.

On a final note, we really wanted to say this; "We love our school, we love our people, and we love all our school days at BSC.

Thank you for reading

 “HOW GOOD ARE WE!."
