Year 1/2 and 2/3 Italian

This term the grade 1/2 and 2/3  students have been exploring the wonderful world of pets “Animali Domestici” and animals in general. Engaging in exciting activities and interactive games, the students have been learning the names of various animals in Italian and discovering fascinating facts about different species. The students have been exposed to an array of Italian vocabulary related to pets. From the common pets like” il cane” (dog) and “il gatto” (cat) to the more exotic animals like” il coniglio” (rabbit) and “il Pappagallo” (parrot), our young linguists have been expanding their word lists. The students have been asking and answering questions like “Quanti animali hai?” (How many pets do you have?) and “Come si chiama il tuo animale?” (What is your pet’s name?). These interactive and oral sessions encourage the students to develop confidence in using Italian. To further enhance their language proficiency, our students have been working on writing short sentences about their own pets or imaginary pet friends and we have created our own class booklet. This has been an opportunity for the students to express their creativity while applying what they have learnt in class.

Year 3 & 4 Students (including Marie's Year 3)

Last week we ventured into the playground to find things that move. The students explored the new Adventure Playground as well as other areas, identifying if and how different items moved. Conversations about the various types of forces that were needed to move the object occurred.

At one point, we talked about gravity, balls and the slide. During this discussion we discovered that the two slides were different! Therefore, we needed to use the same type of ball to determine which slide and gravity would be fastest. This then led to further conversations about the weight of the ball and needing to determine if this was a factor in the results.

It was fun to explore things that could move in the playground. It was interesting how some objects like the tables and the keys on the piano, could move.

Raffaele, Chloe B, Samantha

It was so cool to see how different things moved and how they moved because there were so many different equipment and items that we could choose.  Some things were light and some things were heavy and some things would land at different times.

Isabella, Allie, Roman

We used a fishing scale to weigh the marbles to see if they were the same weight. It was interesting how one of the marbles weighed slightly more than the other one.

Cody, Stephanie

When we were weighing, we realized that the ping-pong balls weighed hardly anything. Even though the red and yellow spikey balls were the same size, the red one weighed more than the yellow spikey ball. That was because the red ball was a little bit more inflated than the yellow ball.  Kaitlyn, Kushi

We were weighing the balls to see why one went down the slide faster than the other. Both ping pong balls weighed less than 1 gram. We are still wondering how we can weigh something that is so light. It was a fantastic experience! Tiffany, Veer, Brenton.

We were weighing the spiky balls to see if they had a different weight. The reason we were doing this was because the yellow ball was faster than the red ball but they were both the same size. So we then checked the weight and found the red spiky ball was heavier than the yellow one. So we think because the yellow ball was lighter it came down the slide faster. Katalina, Azariah, Natalie

Writer's Notebook Update

'We continue to learn more about the writing process and how much fun it is when we have a say in what we want to write!'

This familiar response is the result of the Writer's Notebook, which has been an outstanding success in 2023. Students choose something they would like to write about (usually a recent experience they have had), and begin a process that develops their skills as writers. As shown below, the cycle is; Unpack Seed, Shape Writing,

Plan, Draft, Edit and Publish.

The Writer's Notebook Cycle
The Writer's Notebook Cycle

Bhavin - Unpacking the Seed

Unpacking seed is just like remembering a memory and making a piece of writing on it but before creating a piece of writing on it you have to do a Y-chart. The seed can be a leaf, a photo, an old movie stub or even a  Pokemon card.

Jacob - Shape Your Writing

Shaping your writing is when you think of three different genres and three different titles (one for each genre) and choose  one of the genres and make a piece of writing on it.

Alex - Plan

Once you have finished shaping your writing, you bring out your writer's notebook plan folder and choose a planner depending on your genre. In the planner, there are certain questions you will have to answer which will help you later on in your piece of writing.

Onella - Editing

Editing is about two things, Authorial and Secretarial editing. Authorial is looking at the big picture ~ Does it Make Sense? Secretarial is more about fixing up spelling, punctuation grammar, paragraphs etc. Editing is basically to conference with teachers about your errors in your piece of writing.

Amelia - Publish

To publish a piece of writing is to open a google doc and type up your good copy of your writing. After that, you can change the font, make it bold, italic or underline it. That is how to publish your writing.

Here are some more pieces from the senior students. Enjoy!

Why Footy is Better than Soccer

                                                              By Michael Rechichi

I strongly think that footy is better than soccer. I like footy because there are more players in the field which makes it exciting. I barrack for Carlton in the AFL and I love to watch them play.

Firstly, footy needs more skills and is harder to play than soccer because footy is tricky. You  need more focus and there are harder drills, because the ball is a funny shape. Soccer is played with only their feet but not with hands,  so how hard can it be?

Secondly, footy has a better scoring system and players can score more, which makes the game fun to play and even more fun to watch.  Soccer has fewer goals and is very boring. A game of soccer goes for 90 minutes and you may not even see any goals scored. How boring!

Thirdly, footy is a friendly community game and a family game. People's families all go to see the footy together and the tickets are very cheap. In soccer, only sometimes people go because the tickets are too expensive.

So in conclusion, footy is better than soccer because footy has more teams, you need more skill to play, it has a better scoring system and the tickets are cheap for families. You can go to the footy with the family and play with your community. Most of all, it's very exciting to watch.

People should Walk instead of using Cars

                                                                     By Yash Dev

We should be walking instead of using cars. It’s good for the environment as it reduces the amount of cars on the road. Cars use fossil fuels, which damages our planet. It also helps our physical health. We can increase our stamina and it helps reduce obesity, strengthens our bones and reduces the chances of getting different types of diseases.

Technologists studied over 1000 men and women and those who walked did not get sick easily and even if they got sick, they would have mild symptoms and would recover in a small duration of time. Walking strengthens you. It  benefits us humans who have an injury. Technologists found that walking helps with injuries.

Furthermore, walking improves the environment and our earth by having less traffic, less car accidents and cleaner air. Cars also waste a bunch of Earth’s energy via fossil fuels. Earth’s climate has been changing over time because of the amount of people who use cars. Scientists also notice how earth’s climate is changing and how cars are affecting the earth's climate from 1988 to 2023.

In conclusion, people should be walking more and they should stop using cars. It’s good for you! If people use cars continuously,  Earth will become an inhabitable planet. So come on, get outside and go for a walk!

                                                                       Greek Dancing

By Yianna Kagioglou

After school on Thursdays we go home and eat. After we eat, we get dressed and go to the Sacred Heart hall, where the Greek dancing takes place.

My sister Georgia always goes in before me because she is in the little kids class, which starts at 6:00pm and ends at 7:30pm. My session starts at 7:30pm and ends at 8:00pm. Its a bit boring waiting, but at least I get to talk with some of my old friends from my old school. Their names are Cleopatara, Paris and Scarlet.

When it is my turn to go in and dance, we all line up against the wall and wait for our teacher to stop talking with the parents! Once he stops we always do the basic dances first; we do common dances before we do the karagouna routine. Then we learn some new dances. (The name Karagoúna refers to an ethnic group in Thessaly in

 Central Greece.)

Once we get home we take a nice warm shower then I have free time and I can do whatever I want. I love Greek dancing, because it destresses me, takes my mind off things and helps me work with others in a group. Finally, it connects me to my Greek culture which I am very proud of.

Thai Restaurant

By Harper

Me and My  Family were at the Gold Coast and wanted to go eat and of course, I said let’s go eat cause I was hungry. I was lost for where to eat ‘cause I didn’t know where to eat so I  asked my Dad because he’s usually the one to find a place.

While he was looking for a place, I just ate most of the food in my backpack cause I was hungry. Just then he  found a Thai Restaurant  on Google Maps that was just around the corner . I love Thai food so we decided to go there. We Had to walk there but that was fine.

My Parents and I booked a table, we went to our table and ordered some food and we waited for a long time. I was feeling upset because i was starving! There were lots of people there and it was crowded, but luckily we got in before the line started to become really long. There was a soup that my parents ordered and it looked weird. Just when my food came, it started raining.

My fried rice was good, I loved my food. It was like eating a flavor bomb, it was soooo delicious! The Waiter asked if we wanted to go inside since it was raining, I don’t know why, but my Parents said we would stay here. All the food came and it was an awesome meal. So tasty!

The food was delicious and I loved it.

It was probably the best Thai food I’ve ever eaten.

In my opinion, this was my favorite Restaurant ever!

Finally, it's not every day you get a chance to write a letter to your favourite author. With the help of Rose-Lee and Jaxon, this became a reality for Year 5 student, Roery Villegas.

Roery: 'When I dropped the letter off at the post office, my dream came true! I hope that Andy will send me back a letter and visit our school with his friend Terry'.

Post Office run for Roery and Jaxon.
