Mandarin Newsletter – Week 2 Term 2 2023

Junior Level

In the first few Mandarin lessons of Term Three, our Prep students have further built up their routines to explore and practise functional language at the start of every lesson. We are now much more familiar with the use of gestures to help us memorise the keywords and useful expressions in Mandarin. Besides that, we have also been learning the numbers from 11 to 100 as well as the new letters in Pinyin. We also played many language learning games such as ‘Colour Squat’ to help us review the keywords of colours and practise using expressions for discussing personal preferences.

As for our Year 1/2 students, besides practising and expanding the useful expressions in school and classroom contexts, we have started to learnt to identify the distinctive system of writing in Chinese through practising writing the essential strokes in Chinese characters. We had much fun completing the challenge of ‘Stroke Hunt’ in different random Chinese characters. In the following weeks, we will also begin to explore different conventions around expressing time in Mandarin compared to that of English.

Middle Level

Our Year 3/4 students continued to learn to use different sentence structures to express themselves in Mandarin. While we have been learning a new expression in every lesson, we have also created our own ‘Lucky Dip Jar’. The students have chosen some keywords and expressions they have learnt to write on their tickets, and each time we get to do a lucky dip to let students themselves to give out some quizzes as a challenge to the class. We will also continue to explore the topic around shopping, and learn the expressions of asking the price and buying items in the following weeks.

Senior Level

In our Year 5/6 Mandarin lessons, we have been learning and practising travelling phrases as well as expressions around means of transportation. We also created our advanced version of ‘Lucky Dip Jar’, and our senior students have been doing a wonderful job using gestures to help them recall those challenging long sentences in Mandarin. Besides that, we have also been exploring and further developing our understanding of the writing system of Chinese including learning about the origin of some commom Chinese characters.

*Students who are interested can still join in Term 3, and are more than welcome to have a trial session first.
