Term 2 Mandarin Overviews
Grade Prep
In term 2, students in Grade Prep will learn to count numbers from 1 to 10 in Chinese. They will also learn to read these ten numbers in characters and write them with correct stroke order. They will have an opportunity to explore lucky and unlucky numbers in Chinese culture. Through this unit's learning, students will be engaged in different interactive activities such as worksheets, multimodal exposures, crafts, and singing in the Mandarin class.
Grade 1
In term 2, Grade 1 students will learn to introduce their favorite colours in Chinese sentences. They will also explore primary colours and secondary colours in this unit. They will have an opportunity to identify lucky colours of China and compare them to other cultures. Through this unit's learning, students will be engaged in different interactive activities such as worksheets, multimodal exposures, crafts, and singing in the Mandarin class.
Grade 2
In term 2, Grade 2 students will learn to introduce the date, month, and year in Chinese. They are also going to explore simple sentences to express their birthdays in Chinese, such as "wo de sheng ri shi...我的生日是……" (my birthday is...). Students will also learn to understand that we follow the 'year-month-date' order for the date in the Chinese language. Through this unit's learning, students will be engaged in different interactive activities such as worksheets, multimodal exposures, crafts, and singing in the Mandarin class.
Grade 3
In term 2, Grade 3 students will learn to introduce core and extended family members in sentences in Chinese. They are also going to understand how to use measure words in Chinese. They will be exposed to cultural aspects such as the family bond in China and make comparisons with their home countries. Through this unit's learning, students will be engaged in different interactive activities such as worksheets, multimodal exposures, crafts, and singing in the Mandarin class.
Grade 4
In term 2, Grade 4 students are going to learn to introduce their favorite hobbies in Chinese. They will also learn to identify characters of actions and explore popular hobbies in China. Through this unit's learning, students will be engaged in different interactive activities such as worksheets, multimodal exposures, crafts, and singing in the Mandarin class.
Grade 5
In term 2, Grade 5 students will learn to order food and drinks in a Chinese restaurant context. They are also going to understand how to use different measure words for food and drinks in Chinese. They will have an opportunity to learn table manners and be exposed to a chopstick challenge as a cultural element in this unit.
Grade 6
In term 2, Grade 6 students are going to learn to introduce countries with questions and answers in Chinese. They will also learn to identify characters of countries and explore symbolic icons of different countries. They will work on research on facts of a chosen country and do a presentation in class.
Year 7
During Term 2, Year 7 students are learning to construct sentences while investigating ancient Chinese history. They will learn different pronouns, some essential verbs, and the names for countries and nationalities. They will learn to initiate and respond to close ended questions. The knowledge of Chinese history is interwoven with language learning. The students will learn about the states and influential people of the Spring and Autumn period (770-475 BC) and the Warring States period (475-221 BC), such as Confucius and Qu Yuan. They will also study the dragon boat festival.
Year 8
During Term 2, Year 8 students will use a range of action verbs and some intensifiers to describe interests and events. They will make conversations with their classmates, ask people's needs and wants, and express agreements and disagreements. Geographic topics will be integrated with language learning, such as the concepts of world clock and time zone. The students will collaborate with their teammates and research the sports and activities of the various ethnic minority groups in China.
