Kindergarten

This fortnight in English we have been extending our sound knowledge by learning the sounds ‘c’, ‘h’ and ‘e’, and how to use these sounds when reading and writing. In writing, we have been learning how to form a simple sentence, while also exploring literary descriptions. The last week we have been reading the book ‘Potato People’ and have been extending our vocabulary with WOW words. At the end of the week we got creative and made our very own potato people!

Meanwhile, in Mathematics, we have been continuing a variety of coloured, number and letter patterns. We have also been learning how to solve simple problems using addition and subtraction.

We had so much fun leading up to the show and loved showcasing our work and are very proud of our efforts. Thank you Kindergarten for being so awesome!

Stage 1

During our literacy block, the students have been exploring text types through narratives and have been using the VCOP wall to up-level their writing and entertain the audience. It has been great to see the development of the students understanding of how to write a narrative with the correct structure and purpose.

Maths has consisted of addition and subtraction activities using the interactive whiteboard and concrete materials to develop the students understanding. Year 2 students have continued to practice using the split strategy to add together two and three digit numbers, whilst Year 1 have been implementing the counting on and jump strategy to add numbers.

Finally, the children have been involved in the gymnastics program on Thursday mornings for a few weeks now. They have enjoyed developing their gymnastics skills through exciting activities directed by the great instructors.

Stage 2

NAPLAN is officially done and dusted for another year. Well done to all of our Year 3 students who have worked very hard over the past week completing the four exams in which assessed their reading, writing, numeracy and language conventions. We are very proud of all of our students who gave their best effort in all exams.

We would also like to congratulate the students on their efforts in the Wee Waa Show school work exhibit. Some of our talented students were lucky enough to win the champion, first place, second place or highly commended in their artworks and writing. Well done to all of our students!

During writing workshop this week, students are learning how to edit and up-level an unpunctuated passage. Our students are applying their knowledge of VCOP to make a text more interesting and improve the quality of the writing piece. The students look forward to sharing their up-levelled writing with their peers.

Stage 3

The past fortnight has been very busy for Stage 3.

A huge congratulations to our Year 5 students who completed their NAPLAN assessments. All of the students did their very best and I am so proud of them. We had a number of students take part in the Diocesan Cross Country. A big thank you to Mrs Anna Baird for all of her help with our wonderful art pieces for the Wee Waa Show. Stage 3 won lots of ribbons for our writing and art. I was so impressed with all of the lego, flowers, art, fruit and veggies submitted by our Stage! Lots of future farmers and builders among us.

In the coming fortnight we will be continuing to focus on problem solving and numbers  in Maths. We have been enjoying the 'productive struggle' of the new Rich Maths Tasks. In English, we are writing literary descriptions using a range of figurative language devices.
