VCAL SKATE PARK PROJECT COMPLETION

VCAL students have been working throughout the year on a project at the Maffra skate park. It has been a yearlong project that has reached the first stage of completion. Students worked on a number of different ideas for ways to improve the skate park. They presented these ideas to representatives of the Wellington Shire and Rotary Maffra. The proposals were a huge success and all parties involved were impressed by the enthusiasm and commitment the VCAL students demonstrated.

Wellington Shire representatives Darren Randle andTim Rowe with Maffra Rotary President Ted Mitchell.

Students had the opportunity to work with local business owner and artist Jeremy Kasper. He consulted with the students on their design brief. Jeremy also ran a painting workshop with the students. They learnt how to correctly use spray paint (which was then used at the skate park). The students gained many skills from this workshop. Jeremy also assisted in the painting of the skate park. His knowledge and enthusiasm were so valuable to the students and the project could not have happened without his support. The school also purchased painting supplies from Jeremy’s business, to support the local economy.

The students have demonstrated great leadership skills, development of their communication skills in a range of situations, complete risk assessments and managed to keep a safe worksite during the painting at the skate park. The students even made the local news! Congratulations to all the students involved and to all the staff and community members who have supported this fantastic initiative.

There is a free community day at the Maffra skate park on Sat Nov 2nd from 12pm to 2pm. There will be face painting, free BBQ and drinks, prizes and artwork (created by VCAL students) to give away. Please see the MSC Facebook page for further event details.

VCAL Job Ready Courses

Job Ready Course Hospitality Training.

Recently, students from our VCAL and VCE Hospitality courses, were given the opportunity to undertake training to obtain certificates in RSA, Food handling and Barista training. These courses took place over 2 full days on the 11th and 23rd of October.

During these sessions, our students were also joined by a group of VCAL students from Sale & District Specialist School and their Teacher.

The Students had the opportunity to nominate to do all 3 courses or individual courses across the 2 days to suit their individual needs and interests.

In total, all 20 students who undertook the courses were successful in obtaining the qualifications.

During the Barista training day, the students also had the opportunity to make and sell coffees and hot chocolates to staff and senior students at the college. This was done under the supervision and expert tuition of the personal from ‘RSA for Schools’ in their custom ‘Barista Bus’. This was a very impressive purpose built bus that had the ability to train 12 students at a time. An impressive set-up indeed. Our students, working under the pressure of paying customers at recess and lunch, gained some excellent experience and added greatly to the overall training.

I was very pleased with the mature, supportive and inclusive attitude of all of the students involved and am pleased at the learning each achieved.

I would also like to thank all of the teachers who helped out with supervision over both days of the program.
