How Year Ten Conquered the Kokoda Trail

The mud, the rain, the tears, the toil. Year Ten students faced all this and more as they walked the entire length of the Kokoda Trail. That’s right they walked all 96 kilometres of it.

Actually, the Year Ten team walked one hundred kilometres because they took a detour to a dried up lake where, during World War 2 supplies were dropped for Australian soldiers fighting the Japanese.

Through the hot and humid days and the freezing cold nights, through the torrential rain, risking life and limb and at the mercy of any number of tropical diseases, a core select group of hardy students showed that they too can conquer the famous Kokoda Trail.

“When it wasn’t raining, it was raining,” said one student.

Not surprisingly, on their return both Tim Elliot and Lucas Simon said that the hardest part was the climbing. One climb was about three to four kilometres up a very steep mountain.

Brigade Hill and Isurava were two famous World War Two landmarks that the students got to explore. These two places are where Australian troops faced fierce opposition from Japanese soldiers.

“Isurava is where they hold the big Anzac Day commemoration,” said Tim Elliott.

Tim and Lucas said that eventually the Japanese withdrew their troops from Kokoda because they were needed elsewhere in the Pacific, where the Japanese were suffering heavy losses.

Students got to meet the residents along the Kokoda Trail because nearly every night they got to stay in a village. Even the potters were all local citizens of Papua New Guinea.

Year Tens Celebrate Excellence

A record number of Year ten student’s celebrated academic excellence at the end of term morning tea. The amount of students invited to the event was a credit to the hard work the year 10 students have put in to their academic performance over the course of 2019. We, as a year 10 team would, like to encourage the continuation of the hard work into term 4 and on throughout 2020.
