Curriculum

What a week in the Discovery Centre! Our first full week at school was a busy and exciting one! In Literacy we began our very first Reading Groups rotations where we began by reading a whole class Big Book which had a different reading focus each day, such as making predictions, exploring the difference between letters and words and sharing what our favourite part of the story was. We then delved into working in small groups on different activities each day. Some of these activities include guided reading with the teacher, using playdough to practise letter formation by creating different upper and lowercase letters, using the iPads to engage in the application Reading Eggs and completing the task where we had to determine whether something was a letter or a word.

This week we visited the library where we met our lovely Librarian Mrs. Smaller and her helper Lenny. We listened to stories and looked through books during our visit. Students are able to borrow a book if they bring their library bag. They can borrow the book for two weeks, however can return to class the following week to borrow new books each week.

In Maths we learned about graphs and made various pictographs throughout the week. Students learned that graphs organise data and make it easier to understand. Students investigated questions such as ‘do you have any pets’ and ‘should Mrs Streitberger buy a new’ and made graphs about the responses. We found an overwhelming positive response to liking the new car Mrs Streitberger has been thinking about, so now Foundation has spoken and we will be waiting patiently to check out your new car Mrs Streitberger...

In preparation for Twilight Sports this week we practised our ‘House chants’ in our different house teams. On Thursday 12th March we will be holding our Twilight Sports night and are very excited to dress up in our house colours and kick the night off showing our team spirit by singing our own ‘House chants’. Your child's house colour has been put on the first page of their log book.

We also continued with Junior School Rotations last week. Students worked with different teachers and students from other Foundation classes and Year 1 and 2 to complete a variety of fun activities such as fine motor activities, paper craft. Students will stay with the same group each Friday afternoon but will complete a different activity with a different teacher.

We hope you had a relaxing long weekend and have a great week, we look forward to seeing everyone at Twilight Sports!
