Leadership Centre

Curriculum

It has been yet another fantastic week in the Leadership Centre! There have been plenty of learning opportunities and it has been pleasing to see Year 5/6 students continue to apply themselves in everything that is happening within the classroom. They have demonstrated a great deal of curiosity, love of learning and perseverance throughout Term 1 so far.

We started the week off with the commencement of the Super Speak program. Students engaged in vocal warm up exercises, such as jaw releases, lip trills and low-flow activities, that helped prepare them for the session. Dee from Super Speak modeled ways in which narrative texts can be read aloud, focusing on pitch, tone and expression. In groups, students then received their own text to practice reciting and performed this in front of their class. It was wonderful to see students listen to and act on the feedback given to them from their peers and teachers to improve their speaking. We have had two sessions so far in the Leadership Centre which have been incredibly fun and engaging. We look forward to seeing what is installed for our next session this coming Thursday.

In Maths, we have explored a number of concepts related to fractions and decimals. Students have participated in a range of activities that allow them to practice and unpack learning intentions behind specific focus areas. This includes making a variety of physical representations that highlight each fraction of the halving and thirding fractions families, comparing like and unlike fractions through the use of concrete materials and drawings to discover which is ‘more than’ or ‘less than’ and ordering fractions and decimals within a number line and creating magnified or zoomed number lines to explore number systems in more depth.

Staff have been impressed with all students in the Leadership Centre, as they have really embraced opportunities to use a range of concrete materials to build on their understanding. We continue to encourage students to record and discuss their mathematical thinking so they are aware of the steps they took to solve a problem and to further develop their number sense.

Twilight Sports preparation is well underway and our Year 6 students have done a superb job of creating house chants for their respective houses. The Year 6 students have demonstrated leadership throughout this time as they have worked hard to teach their chants to the rest of the students in their house. Practices are looking great and we can’t wait to see everyone out on the track for Twilight Sports this Thursday!

Have a wonderful week!
