Middle Unit

Years 1 and 2

It has been a fun filled term for the Year ones and twos. Students have been making connections with things they have learned about Indigenous Australians past and present. They have also been learning about narrative writing. The two concepts have married together well with the exploration of traditional dream time stories. Here is a story written by MU5, inspired by the aboriginal dreamtime story ‘Bunjil the Eagle’:

Bunjil’s Quest

Bunjil the eagle lived in the forest. One day Bunjil the eagle needed help. Your help.

Bunjil wanted a friend. Bunjil made a friend called Kevin the Owl. Kevin is nice! Owls are really good for night, they can help Bunjil see. Bunjil has an Emu totem. The emu puts you on his back and runs. “Hold on tight, get ready, go!” Emu runs soooooo fast that he gets tired. “Ha ha ha! I need a drink.” he says. “Look, there’s an oasis. Ahhh, that’s better!” “Come on, let’s go!” you say. “Gee-up! We’re nearly there…I can see the people!...”

Bunjil shouts “Help! My friend is trapped!” He wants help from you!

“Quick, Help! Kevin’s been kidnapped by humans!” screamed Zoe the Wallaby. “I know who can help!” said Bunjil. “But who?” Zoe asked. “That person over there. See.” Replied Bunjil. He points to you. You say “Let’s go!”

Hey, you reader. I don’t know who you are or what you are but we need to get help. Lets go in to the centre of the forest to free Kevin… and now!

2 Hours later… I’m getting sleepy, zzzzzz!!!

Ok, I’m awake, let’s… oh no, YIKES!

Suddenly a kangaroo came out of nowhere and chased you! He came fast at you. Then you ran into a building. Bunjil said “I don’t know why there’s a building in the forest.” But he came in the building so you ran in the elevator and luckily pressed the button. Then the elevator broke down. “Oh, no!” Bunjil said. Then he hid in the elevator and you ran out of the building. “Thank goodness!”

The totem that you have is running fast! The Emu is helpful because it is a very fast animal and it can help you run fast, away from the kangaroo.

You sneak in and see the humans. You go down to the floor and get the key. You let Kevin the owl out. Then you sneak out again and put the key back. You go out to the forest.

Kevin was so grateful. He gave you a potion that protects you. So go on, try it out! It works! You can’t get hurt! Yay! You can use it for your whole life! Yes you can! “Thank you so much” you say.

Bunjil is feeling very happy that you saved his friend so he gives you the Emu totem to keep.

So in the end Kevin the owl was finally free. And everybody was happy!!!!! You feel very proud.

The End.   By the students of MU5
