School Council

On behalf of everyone on School Council, welcome to another year, our third as Beaumaris Secondary College (BSC), as we continue to build on the many years of teaching and learning on this site of the old Beaumaris High School (BHS), and Beaumaris campus Sandringham College, all the way back to 1958. The old BHS had a capacity of 1100 students in buildings that sprawled over much of this magnificent site we are lucky to have here by the bay. While we have no desire to spread more significantly over the open space and expanse of our land, we do need to expand our learning facilities to cater for that same number of students in the very near future.

Over the last 18 months, we have been engaged in a positive and ongoing dialogue with our local Members of Parliament to start discussions, lobby and advocate for the construction of the Stage 2 build of BSC, to cater for 1100 students here from Years 7-12. Our enrolment data strongly supports the need for this expansion, as we have greatly exceeded the Department's expectations of enrolments to the school in the first three years. We are hopeful we will receive the funds we need to expand the main building on three levels, down towards the oval, along Balcombe Road. This expansion would allow us to create the facilities that we originally envisaged when we planned and mapped out the school for Years 7-12 back in 2015.

We have had numerous discussions with our local Members of Parliament in the State Government, and these have progressed to be very positive in nature. We feel we have put an extremely strong case forward to receive the funding we need in the May State Budget. Due to the nature of the Budget, we don't expect to have any confirmed news to share with you on this topic until after the Budget is handed down by the Treasurer, Tim Pallas, in the first week in May.

On a separate note, I would like to thank Carly Skinner and Gehan Roberts for their contributions to School Council. Gehan has been a valued contributor and wise voice over the last 12 months, while Carly's knowledge, skill and energy have been crucial to the school's success over the last two years. It's great to welcome back Nicole Fidler to Council for a further two years, and also have two new parents in Samantha Morton and Annelise Pearce joining us on two year terms from this month. We look forward to working hard to further grow the success of the school for our wonderful students, teachers and families over the next 12 months.

Kind Regards, Steve
