International Women's Day

We were lucky enough to have to 2 outstanding women present at our school for International Women's Day on Tuesday 8 March. Their engaging presentation to our Year 7 girls was recorded and sent to our local Primary Schools.

From Prachiti Parikh, Year 7

Tuesday was International Women’s Day, and two women, Dr Annalisa Contos and Dr Annette Davisson, came in to talk to us about STEAM based jobs for women. They talked about their personal experiences and what they had accomplished so far. I found the talk very inspiring, and their jobs extremely interesting.

First we heard from Dr Contos, who works to conserve water, so that we can have clean drinking water. She recounted her various experiences and projects that she had worked on in the past, including conferences all around the world and exploring caves that no one had ever been in before. Dr Contos also talked about her current project, which is making a freshwater lake connect to other lakes, because if the water does not have a route by which it can escape then it will get saltier and saltier. Dr Contos now has her own company.

After that Dr Davison told us about her life. She was originally from Yorkshire, and grew up there. She lived on a farm and felt very comfortable with animals right from the start. She told us about the challenges that she faced while studying, and the hurtful comments of others. Dr Davison told us not to listen to any people that said we weren’t good enough. She is a microbiologist, and now has her own company as well. She now mainly works as a risk analyst.

The talk was very interesting and it will definitely be useful to me in the future.
