Year 9 News

Welcome back

Hello everyone and welcome back to this edition of the Year 9 News and what a pleasure it is to be writing the article that represents all of the hard work of students and staff to see 2022 off to such a positive start.

Thank you to all the parents and guardians that were able to make it to the welcome BBQ and information seminar. For anybody that missed this and would like the opportunity catch up on the information provided, please do not hesitate to contact Glen Stephenson at the school for a conversation about what to expect over the school year or to receive a copy of the presentation.

The Victorian School for Student Leadership (Alpine School)

Congratulations to; Bryleigh Matthews, Jackson Owens, Jett Macrae, Zoe Woodward and Krystah Foster. These students are the successful applicants for the Alpine school in term 2. The Alpine School sees students attend the Campus at Dinner plain for the entire term. Here they will participate in a range of learning adventure learning activities all while working together to develop a community learning project that will benefit the entire school community. We are all looking forward to their participation and the contributions they will make to our community.

Learning Behavior Reports (LBUs)

The first round of LBUs have been now been released. Congratulations to all the students who worked hard and true to earn an All-star award. To those that missed out this time around, a reminder, all students have the capacity to show positive learning behaviour such as those that are reported on in the LBUs. If you are having trouble meeting goals in regard to LBUs and would like some assistance with strategies or specific things you can do to improve in these areas, please do not hesitate to get in touch with the school and make an appointment with teachers or team leader.

College Athletics Day

While the college swimming sports did not proceed in the traditional format this year, the college athletics day did. This was an outstanding day, with fun had by all who participated. In the days leading up to the event year 9s were encouraged to sign up to as many events as they could handle and they did not disappoint. Special congratulations to all those that received a ribbon or medal for their performances.

Summit Camp Team Building Day

Students across year 9 have been working on goal setting during home-groups. Students have learned how to use the S.M.A.R.T approach to goal setting and have written  personal, academic and social goals. As culmination of this work and to address the need for an opportunity to bond as a group, the year 9 Team has organised a team building day at the Summit Camp Trafalgar. This will take place on the 21st March. Further details can be found on the Compass parent portal as well as E-consent. There is a $20 charge associated with this excursion which covers the cost of lunch, travel, and admission to the park. If you are having difficulty paying this cost please contact the office to hear about payment options.

Around the Classrooms: Science

Currently in Science classes, year 9s have been learning about acid-base reactions and the pH scale. This work will see them conducting a range of independent experiments testing the pH of various chemicals and trying to predict whether chemicals are likely to form acids or bases when added to water by looking at their chemical formulas. Pictured here are scientists, Brooke Ryan and Cianese Bannister.
