General Achievement Test (GAT) 2022

Following the announcement that senior students will be tested in literacy and numeracy and the notification that the GAT has been shifted to 7 September, staff, students and families need to be aware that ALL senior secondary students will be required to sit the GAT this year.

This is part of the VCE/VCAL system reform and brings Victoria into line with all other Australian states.

The GAT will now be split into two sections:

-Section A will assess literacy and numeracy skills

-Section B will assess skills in mathematics, science, technology, the arts and humanities, with an increased focus on critical and creative thinking skills.

All students enrolled in one or more VCE or scored VCE VET Unit 3 –4 sequence will be required to sit Sections A and B. Senior VCAL students will sit Section A.

Students will receive a certificate of attainment stating they either met or exceeded minimum standards of literacy and numeracy.

The literacy and numeracy standards are measured independently and are not included in the calculations of VCE results or awarding of the VCAL. Obtaining a senior secondary certificate is not contingent on a particular literacy and numeracy outcome in the GAT.

Trinity College is supporting our senior students through this change and making sure that students understand what is required of them for the GAT on 7 September. Further details will be provided closer to the date.

If you would like more information about the GAT changes, please contact Year 12 Coordinator Angela McGlynn, VCE Coordinator Karen A Hart, VCAL coordinator Pamela Scott or Director of Learning Libby Ryan.
