Wellbeing Matters @ St Luke's

Our Intentional Wellbeing Program at St Luke’s in Years 7-11

There are many ways that we meet the wellbeing needs of our students at St Luke’s! One such example of this is our intentional, timetabled Wellbeing Program. In Years 7 through to 11 we have thirty minutes daily of intentional wellbeing time. Each day offers students an opportunity to positively focus on different aspects of their wellbeing; ensuring that they are building a toolkit of skills to allow them to flourish and engage in their learning. The structure of the week aligns with a Positive Psychology approach to wellbeing and also embeds Pillars such as Manage and Relate, for example.

Here is a snapshot of the week:

Manage Me Monday: This is dedicated time for students to prepare for the week ahead. This time should build their sense of agency, efficacy and prevent/reduce stress. This time allows for reflection on the previous week’s achievements. Students are able to use their strengths to set/achieve goals and develop time management, organisation and study skills. Topics covered include managing procrastination, using visual organisers, chunking tasks to make them manageable (and many more).

Mentor Time on Tuesdays and Thursdays: Having positive relationships at school is a key way to make students feel that they belong and are safe and supported. Mentor time allows for the building of these positive relationships, as the Mentor Teacher acts as a ‘champion’ for their students. During this time, there will be a focus on wellbeing priorities such as belonging, respectful relationships, building effective sleep habits and other social/emotional skill building. There is also a weekly gratitude practice - ‘Thankful Thursday’. On Tuesday and Thursday students also complete their Skodel wellbeing check-ins. Invaluable data and insights from these check-ins allow us to support each one of our students; particularly in relation to managing their feelings and understanding why they feel a particular emotion.

Wellbeing Wednesday: Wellbeing Wednesday is focused on building the strategy and skill of being mindful. Mindfulness has been shown to enhance a person’s wellbeing, helps to manage stress and reduce anxiety and be more engaged learners.

Feel Good Friday: Despite the rain wreaking havoc this term, Feel Good Friday aims to  build a sense of teamwork/belonging and the importance of physical health to overall wellbeing. Students are involved in different sporting/fitness activities with their Mentor Groups.
