Life Design - Work Studies Year 10

All students in year 10 complete one unit of preliminary and one unit of HSC Work Studies at St Luke’s. Work studies explores professional practice and preparation for students to engage professionally within the world of work. This course includes work like building a resume, portfolio of work, engaging with others, working in teams, and managing projects. The work students complete in Work Studies, in addition to counting towards HSC units can also be accredited for two units towards further diploma level study.  After completing this course in 2021, all of our current year 11 students have the ability to register for recognition of prior learning for two units towards a diploma course.   Next week, after selecting a job advertisement, examining the requirements and learning how to write a job application and resume, Year 10 students will engage in interviews with recruitment officers from different companies who will then give them feedback on how they can improve.

Congratulations

Congratulations to Lana Kisur in Year 11, who is completing a traineeship at St Luke’s Catholic Early Learning Centre. This means that Lana, in addition to her HSC, will also graduate from St Luke’s with a Certificate in Early Childhood, a Certificate in Hospitality and a day a week work experience in our CELC. Since these certifications count as part of an HSC, to complete her HSC Lana only needs to complete English and Studies of Religion to graduate.

Congratulations to Cooper Jansen from Year 10, who has obtained a traineeship in Retail with McDonalds. This was offered to Cooper from McDonalds, who are a very highly respected provider due to his hard work and dedication at his part time job. His retail certificate will contribute to the study of his HSC next year.

Year 9 electives

Students in year 9 all engage in passion based electives as part of Life Design which are either courses designed around student passions, or accelerated HSC Courses. If a student is studying an accelerated HSC course in year 9, when they start studying the HSC in year 11, they will only need to complete 7 out of the 12 required units for year 11. Students can accrue HSC credits for up to 5 years.  Students completing Hospitality, Entertainment and Creative Industries will all accrue HSC Credits as well as receive VET Certificates at the end of year 10.

Hospitality (A VET Certification and HSC Course)

This term in hospitality we have been learning about safe and hygienic workplaces and what they involve. Safe and hygienic workplaces involve personal hygiene, workspace cleanliness, clean toilet facilities, and a clean kitchen are the four components of basic workplace hygiene. We also have been recently filling out an incident report and learning what an incident report is used for and how it can help in a workplace. We also have been cooking in the kitchen- just last week we made some fried rice which contained bacon, soy sauce, carrots and many more. Joshua Francis Year 9

Creativity and e-commerce   (A Student Passion course)

Students are creating and marketing a product or service on their own ‘business’ Instagram posts. Initially, the students used IKIGAs and Mood Boards to present their visions. They have recently created reels to promote their business/service and have reflected on their entrepreneurial learnings so far.

Some students have additionally chosen to undertake their own self-paced learning by completing the online modules for the course ‘Entrepreneurship - from ideas to reality’ offered through Open Learning.

The Hub - Year 11

As year 11 assessments are starting to come in, students have expressed interest in having the opportunity to work in the Hub in the afternoon.  We have staff volunteering to come in in the afternoons for the remainder of the term, as a trial as to what may be able to be done next term. The timetable has been published to year 11 students.

The preliminary assessment booklet is now available on the ROSA and HSC Certification Course on Canvas. All students and parents have access to this course through their canvas log-ins. This booklet lists all assessments in year 11, as well as important processes to know in terms of appeals in case of illness. The full booklet is also available here.

Hair and Uniform Expectations

Students in SOE have started the year looking good! There are, however, three key points to highlight:

  • Our young men are required to be cleanly shaved
  • Our young women are required to have ‘natural’ eyelashes and nails
  • With current wet weather, and cooler weather ahead, non-college jumpers/hoodies are not permitted.

There will be a focus on grooming and jewellery from this point forward. If your child does not meet the college guidelines you will be kept in the loop via email correspondence (in the first instance). The uniform policy is actually pretty straight forward and can be found with this hyperlink.
