1/2 News

This Term in 1/2.

This term the 1/2 students have enjoyed starting the week with Yoga sessions taken by our instructor Jacklyn in the school hall. We have learnt new yoga poses and techniques to calm our bodies and minds. It has been a wonderful, calm way to start our week at school.

During our inquiry into ‘Who we are’, the students have been exploring how learning about ourselves and others leads to respectful relationships. After reading the book ‘The Best Part of Me’, each student wrote a reflection describing a physical feature and how they make us special. These are proudly displayed in the classrooms.

The students have enjoyed participating in hands-on Mathematics this term. Lots of math games and use of manipulatives to develop place value understanding and to solve addition and subtraction problems. The students have enjoyed working in teams to solve problems, and then sharing their thinking with their peers. We are discovering there can be many different ways to solve the same problem!

This term the students began their inquiry into our year long unit ‘How we express ourselves.’ They enjoyed inquiring into the tradition of St. Patrick's day, where we investigated the symbols and traditions associated with this day and created our own St Patricks day hats to display these. While exploring the tradition of Easter, the students were fascinated to discover the significance behind some of the traditions we see at Easter, like hot cross buns and chocolate eggs.

We have been collecting data within our classes to gain an understanding of the different traditions we have at Easter time. After collecting this data and investigating the features of data displays, we represented this information on bar and picture graphs. The most popular Easter tradition in 1/2 was participating in an easter egg hunt!

Throughout the term, the students eagerly engaged in Writers Workshop. After brainstorming ideas and investigating what authors use in their writing, students created their own book. The students proudly shared these at our Writing Celebration, where each students’ book was on display to be read and celebrated. We were so proud of what we achieved.
