Dear Year Five families,
The Year Fives have had an exciting return to onsite learning, with the entire school community now back together. Students have quickly settled back into the routines of school life and are engaged in constructive learning.
Inquiry & Literacy
We are continuing to inquire into our Transdisciplinary Theme, ‘How We Express Ourselves’ and our central idea, ‘The Arts reflect and challenge society.’ Students have been reading articles and poems based on social issues that affect the community and people in general. In poetry, we have studied poetic devices such as alliteration, onomatopoeia, rhyming patterns and assonance. Teachers were amazed with some of the poetry students composed and their ability to incorporate the various poetic devices.
Here is an example of a poem titled: - Anti- Bullying
This beautiful poem has an emotional message on a social issue and links to our Inquiry. Students are currently in the process of choosing a social issue to investigate. Over the next few weeks, they will be identifying a social issue of interest and working to define the issue, research it and understand its impact on society. Towards the end of the unit, students will have the opportunity to express their social issue in an art form. Art is a medium through which many messages are expressed. In class we have been exploring different art forms and looking at how different artists express their views and passions. This enables students to have a broad vision of different art forms and will be able to make an informed decision of the art form they would like to express themselves through.
Over the next few weeks, students will be engaging in discussions and commencing their research on their chosen social issue. This investigation will authentically integrate Reading, Writing, Inquiry and Visual Art.
Mathematics
In Mathematics, students have been learning about symmetry and tessellations. We have investigated lines of symmetry, reflective symmetry and rotational symmetry. Students have been able to see the relationship between symmetry and tessellations. They took an in-depth look at nature, people, animals and objects around them to identify where they could find symmetrical objects and apply this knowledge to real-world scenarios. This has also provided students with another idea in how they can express themselves.
Our students and teachers are looking forward to seeing how our learners can best express themselves through art.
We encourage all families to regularly engage in discussions about their child’s learning throughout this Inquiry.
