Year Three News

Written by the Year Three Team

It has been fantastic to have all our Year Three students back onsite to continue our fantastic learning journey throughout this year. The Year Three team has been tremendously impressed with how principled and open-minded students have been since returning to school. With Book Week, Christmas Carols and many other exciting events coming up, we cannot wait to finish the year on a high note!

Reading

In Reading, the Year Three students have spent this week looking at their Book Week text and completing a text innovation. Students have read their class's text throughout the week summarising, questioning, and connecting their text to their own lives. Here is a list of the texts the Year Three classes have been exploring!

3A- ‘The Magic Beach’ by Alison Lester

3B- ‘If Kids Ruled the World’ by Linda Bayley

3C- ‘The Legend of Rock, Paper, Scissors’ by Drew Daywalt

3D- ‘Possum in the House’ by Kiersten Jensen

3E- ‘The Important Book’ by Margaret Wise Brown

Students will have the opportunity to write their own version of their class text throughout the week and publish their work alongside some fantastic art! We cannot wait to read these fantastic text innovations!

Writing

Writing has allowed students to continue working on crafting Non-Fiction style texts, in particular Information Texts. Students have been using the endangered animal, the Orangutan, as a class case study to write an information text about. This has allowed them to learn the writing craft for Information Texts before they set off next week to choose their own animal to write about! These writing pieces will fit great with our new Unit of Inquiry, ‘Sharing the Planet’.

Mathematics

In Maths, students have started a short unit on Shape. They have looked at both 2D shapes and 3D objects, describing the properties of shapes seen in the world around us. Students completed an engaging lesson where they used toothpicks and Blutac to create their own 3D objects, describing how many faces, corners and edges their shapes have. Take a look at some of the fantastic creations by Class 3D below!

Inquiry

We have now moved into our fifth and final Unit of Inquiry, ‘Sharing the Planet’, with the Central Idea, ‘Human advancements have impacted the habitats of animals’. Students began by experiencing a provocation with the great David Attenborough informing them of the impact humans have had on the wilderness. They then got a chance to unpack the Central Idea, starting to discover the challenges we face with sustainability and climate change. This week, students have started looking at animals and their species, doing thorough research to create a poster about a species of animal. Moving forward, students will get to start to look at animal adaptations and how humans have impacted habitats over time.
