‘This hope (of Jesus) is like an anchor for us. It is strong and sure and keeps us safe.’ Hebrews 6:19.

I said to the Year Two class, "You have 20 seconds to point to an anchor, ready go."  They all looked around the class hurriedly and pointed to all sorts of things…except the anchor on their shirt. After I reminded them of the anchor on their shirt, I got a few responses of, "Oh yeah", or "is that an anchor?  I never knew that."

We watched a video of how an anchor works. When the wind comes and tries to toss the boat around, the anchor digs into the sand at the bottom of the ocean even further, holding the boat more securely. Then the wind tried to spin the boat round in circles and the anchor spun round and round in the sand keeping the boat on top of the ocean, still and in one spot. We discussed that the wind is like the problems and hard times that come in life, that try to blow us away and off track. When these things happen, Jesus digs down and looks after us even more.  He is the strong anchor that keeps us attached to solid ground.  When the problems of life try to spin us around, Jesus is our anchor that is strong and keeps us steady.  Lastly we made a colourful anchor with a paper chain.

Today, anchors symbolise things such as:

  • Safety
  • Stability
  • New adventures
  • Resilience
  • Hope
  • Confidence
  • Strength

All the above characteristics we can relate to Jesus. Living and trusting in Jesus gives us safety, stability, resilience, confidence and strength. After becoming a Christian, I definitely had new and exciting adventures with God, which my life would have been rather dull without.  Jesus is also the anchor that gives us hope; hope for a better life and future with him in heaven.
