Safer Internet Day 2021

Safer Internet Day,

Tuesday, 9 February 2021

Safer Internet Day is an annual, worldwide event that promotes the use of a safe and positive internet for all. This event is celebrated by millions of people in 170 countries around the world.

The theme for this year’s Safer Internet Day is #StartTheChat. All Australians are encouraged to start a chat about online safety at home, school, work and in the community.

You can #StartTheChat  with your child by:

  • Playing games together and talking about favourite apps, games or websites.
  • Asking about the funniest thing they've seen online.
  • Asking about their online experiences, who they are talking to and whether they are having any issues. However, if there are issues reassure your child they can always come to you, no matter what.
  • Talking about what they could do if they were treated unfairly in an online game.
  • Discussing and creating together rules and consequences for devices and online access.

At St Anthony’s we are committed to online safety. We recognise both the benefits and risks of using digital devices and online resources. With our staff and our students we set clear expectations about the use of devices and the internet and we promote online safety in all classes.

For information about how you can help your children have safer experiences online I recommend the following resources from the eSafety Commissioner’s website:

Back to school: Top tips for parents/carers

Julie Inman Grant, eSafety Commissioner, offers some advice regarding cyberbullying, screen time, parent controls, etc.

Online safety bookcovers some of the key online safety issues for young people including a range of practical tips and advice on what to do if things go wrong. There is also a list of important services that can offer extra support.

eSafety Guide - if your child plays or wants to play a game/app, check this guide. It gives information about games, apps and social media, including how to protect your information and report inappropriate content.
