Hello and welcome to the Inquiry Centre 2021! We are extremely excited to be back at school and are eagerly looking forward to so many fantastic things this year.

During the short time we were at school last week, students spent time getting to know their peers and new teachers, and continued to build friendships developed during Step Up Week last year.

For Writing last week, students wrote a Holiday Recount describing all of the fantastic and interesting things they did on their holidays. It was wonderful to read about so many different events, including birthdays, many trips to the beach, vacations to the Grampians and time spent at Water or Theme Parks. In Literacy, students created Reading Goal Bookmarks that will be used to help them improve their reading skills by displaying their individual reading goal that they will focus on during Literacy Groups. These reading goals are made in collaboration with students and can be supported at home when reading students' Take Home Books. We will begin Take Home Books and Reading Logs this week. These texts are intended for students to practise the reading skills they develop during class time. They should not be overly challenging for students. We encourage students to discuss their Take Home Book with those they are reading to, such as asking and answering questions about characters or events within the text.

In Mathematics, we began to explore Place Value focusing on numbers that are more or less than a given number. Students engaged in hands-on games and activities to build their number sense. Next week, students will further develop their knowledge of patterns by identifying and creating number, shape and colour patterns.

This term’s Guided Inquiry topic is ‘Places and Spaces’. This topic focuses on the concept of community. Students will investigate what makes a community, different people and services within their community, as well as how to help and take care of the community. These ideas will be further supported by our Science unit where students will explore different animals, animal communities and their habitats.
