Leadership Centre

Curriculum
Welcome back to 2021! We trust that everyone had a safe and enjoyable holiday time and are all recharged to commence what will be a very busy term and year! From School Swimming to Cyber Safety Day to Leadership and Wellbeing Day, Term 1 offers a wide range of learning opportunities and experiences.
After a successful three day Step-Up program last year, students reconnected with their peers and resumed their class’s routine. Circle Times in each class showcased the wide range of recreational activities that students participated in over the holiday period. After sharing their holiday experiences students then wrote a holiday recount which described in more detail how they spent their time with family and friends.
Time was also allocated last Thursday on revising the class expectations. They are not called rules but expectations as students are expected to behave and interact in agreed upon and reasonable ways. After discussing the expectations (which connect with our school values of Respect, Responsibility, Life-Long learning, Integrity and Inclusion) students then signed their name, demonstrating their agreement to comply and display their expected behaviours throughout all aspects of the school day.
On Thursday, time was dedicated for students to design their ‘helping hand’. This task required students to draw an outline of their hand and write inside each finger one person that they could go to if they needed help or to discuss an issue. These were glued into their scrapbook for ongoing reference. This connected well with the ‘Zones of Regulation Toolbox’ task. We discussed what ‘regulation’ and ‘to regulate’ means and brainstormed a range of strategies and tools that could be implemented to help regulate and deal with a wide range of emotions. It is important that students take time to think about and identify at least five strategies that they can use when they are feeling anxious, upset, overly excited or angry to help them calm down and eventually move into the green zone (which is the desired zone to be in -if you’re in green then you are good to go!)
On Friday students worked on their ‘Pleasant Profile’ where they drew images that best represented their likes as well as them as a person. Eg. a soccer image, hamburger, swimming, camping, characters strength of creativity. These will be displayed in each classroom and will allow for all students to view their peers’ work and make connections linked to their shared interests and likes.
Due to the inclement weather we were unable to venture outside for sport and play but there was plenty to keep everyone happy and engaged.
We finished the week with a Leadership Centre Kahoot quiz which tested the students’ knowledge about all of the teachers in 5/6.
We are looking forward to starting our full first week of Term 1 and continuing to work with all students as they embark on their 2021 learning journey.
Have a great week!

Year 6 to 7 High School Transition
Although the school year has only just commenced, it is important for parents and carers of current Year Six students to start considering their child’s High School placement for 2022. School Tours will again look different in Term 1. Parents can visit the High Schools website to find out more information about virtual tours and updated information regarding when onsite school tours may resume. I would also encourage current parents and carers of Year five students to start exploring their High School options for 2023.
A more detailed transition timeline will be provided in the newsletter later in Term 1.
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact your child’s classroom teacher.
