Library

  • Introduce the Library setting to the children and discuss what a Library is used for.
  • Introduce certain parts of a book (title, cover, call number, spine, title page, author and illustrator).
  • Increase the children’s literature awareness and appreciation with stories, follow up discussions.
  • Identify the ‘Picture Fiction’ area and how to browse, borrow and return a book.
  • Discuss the importance of library bags.
  • Discuss how to put picture books away – in alphabetical order, front cover facing and correct way up.
  • Read 'Billy and the Big New School' by C & L Anholt and discuss the areas of school, incorporating Preps Unit of Inquiry 'How We Organise Ourselves'.

Visual Arts

 

The Term 1 Unit of Inquiry is called “Art Elements”, which integrates with the Transdisciplinary theme- “How we organise ourselves”. Looking at the Concepts of Function and Causation, the students focus on, line, mark making, pattern and colour, through the use of a variety of art materials.  

 

Students participate in- 

  • Experimenting with mark making and line drawing. The students explore marks made by the side and other parts of the oil pastel to create Tibetan Butter Sculptures, inspired by ‘Losar’ the Tibetan New Year. The students design, paint and incorporate their experimental mark making to add a decorative element. 
  • Colour mixing Primary Colours to create Secondary Colours- Introduced with colour books ‘Vashti’s Dot’ and ‘Colours’. The students experiment and explore colour mixing and shape with a variety of art materials. 
  • They use the result from the colour mixing experiment to collage and draw a final art work, inspired by the Spanish artist Miro.  

Physical Education

 

Learning about movement and use of equipment:

  • Movement within specific areas in an external environment, adhering to rules, working together and use of various types of equipment and fun Parachute activities.
  • Fun Football Clinic.

Focus: Working together as a group showing respect and cooperation with others. Being principled and caring for each other.

 

Whistle and formation drills and staying within a designated space. Introduction to various types of equipment and various ways of using it within that designated space. Activities incorporating spatial awareness with and without equipment and working together.

  • Concepts: Causation: Safety in physical education classes, awareness of other children in the class.
  • Learner Profile: Discussion with the children about Learner Profiles demonstrated during the lesson.

Music

PYP Unit of Inquiry : “How We Organise Ourselves” and “Who We Are” 

 

Focus: To establish class routines and learning, by encouraging an attitude of participation and independence and also care towards each other. Students will increase their knowledge of music as the elements of Beat, Pitch, Dynamics and Tempo are introduced. 

 

The students will: 

  • Understand how music affects our emotions and how different music may affect thoughts and behaviours.  
  • Sing songs related to the unit of inquiry. 
  • Investigate ways to improve their singing and play instruments correctly. 
  • Take part in action rhymes and games where each child has a leadership role.  
  • Show respect by learning to look after classroom instruments. 
  • Demonstrate correct behaviours for being a “performer” or “audience member”.  
  • Learn new music vocabulary. 
  • Listen and respond to music through movement.  
  • Listen and appreciate music from different cultures.

Japanese

 

 Japanese

  • Students are introduced to the Japanese language and where the language is spoken. They travel and see what Japan looks like with Bigbird and compare the cultural differences with Australia and Japanese in relation to their home, the people, the language and how the city looks. 
  • Students understand that most people in Japan would be Japanese and speak a different language to English. Student also understand how difficult it can be not knowing some of the language and will start to learn some words in Japanese to greet and farewell the teacher, follow instructions, Give and show appreciation in Japanese and start to count some numbers in another language. 
  • The students will also engage in various cultural activities such as origami, celebrating cultural events (hinamatsuri) and learn with songs and gestures. 

Cultural Areas 

  • Students will be understanding Japanese people will generally bow to show honour and respect to someone. 
  • Learn about Japan, and compare their home, their lifestyle and talk about the difference with Japan and Australia 
  • Have a go folding paper to try and make something. 
  • Learn cultural events like Hinamatsuri (girls’ day)
