KHS Student Keely Pearson Secures Her Future.

Keely Pearson was offered an apprenticeship with local company Macleay Air

Keely talks about what got her interested in a trade

Interview with Keely

What got you interested in electrical work?

I was sitting on the bus one day and I was thinking about a trade (electrician) something I could do that was both physically and mentally stimulating. I have ridden motorbikes for most of my life and I have a keen interest in sport and the outdoors, so I guess I knew that I didn’t want a job that would keep me inside at a desk. I got some other work experience with an electrician and I really enjoyed it. From that experience  I knew air conditioning/refrigeration work would be similar so I organised work experience through the school, working with our Career advisors Mr Rix and Mr Squires. For a week I experienced working with Macleay Air installing air conditioners at local businesses and residential premises, as well as trouble shooting issues with air conditioning units. I really enjoyed the work.

What do you enjoy most about the work?

The work is hands on and I really like the challenge of learning something new each day. As an extra bonus I don't have to get too dressed up for work, as that is not really my style. I love showing that I am just as capable as many of the boys, doing most of the work they they do, especially the physical work. I don’t mind working in a typically male dominated industry as I have been racing motorbikes against boys most of my life so I am comfortable around guys.

So you obviously impressed those at Macleay Air enough for them to offer you an apprenticeship, how do you think you did that?

I showed them that I had initiative, I was self- directed and motivated and demonstrated that I could work as part of their team. I think I surprised my employers in my physical capabilities to be able to handle the male roles of the job.

So when do you begin the next stage of your journey?

Late November, working 5 days a week with a TAFE course starting next year. I will still receive my Year 10 ROSA.

What do your friends think of your new career?

They are really happy for me and are supportive of my choices.

I would just like to say thank you to the KHS Career Advisors for all their time and effort in getting me the work experience. Thank you to Macleay Air for giving me the opportunity to start in an industry that I am interested in.
