Teaching and Learning

Room 6

We are learning to take care of the school garden. On Wednesday some of our class planted seedlings and helped to water them. While the other class members worked on preparing the compost. The seedlings we planted were: Tomatoes, Zucchini's, Rocket, Beans and Cucumbers. We put mulch on the plants to help them grow. We will come back again to help with some more gardening.

Did you know that learning to read Japanese involves learning 3 different alphabets? They are HiraganaKatakana and Kanji. Each alphabet has a different function and a combination of the three can be used to write one sentence.

Students in Japan begin to learn to read and write Hiragana first so that’s exactly what Room 4 has been doing!

We have learned what the alphabet sounds like as well as how to learn the order and patterns that structure it. This is important as there are 46 characters to learn!

We have learned to read over half of them and enjoy challenging ourselves to read and write these characters in a variety of different ways.

Science News

Last week, some students from Room 12 attended the NRM Climate Change Conference. These students were: Emily, Zara, Natalie, Hannah, Alyssa, Kohta, Zane, Lachie and Connor. They presented the bioplastic products they made to a panel of experts who then gave them feedback on their excellent ideas. They also learnt a lot from the other schools who also presented. Well done to the Room 12 students who attended this conference and impressed the panel with their knowledge and understanding of climate change!

Wakakirri

In 2020, everything has looked a bit different. Wakakirri was no exception. Rooms 11, 12 and 14 participated in the national performing arts festival this year. Rather than a live performance, we sent in a video entry and received an award for "Best Global Awareness story" for our video, "An Inconvenient Scrooge". Our students were involved every step of the way, including making costumes, painting sets, making props, designing choreography and performing to the very best of their ability. Thanks to our WBPS families for sourcing materials, costumes and offering expertise. Special thanks go to Mrs. Newcombe and Jo Knott for their help with choreography and set design.
