Year 7 Still Life Artwork

Artwork by Patrick Cookson

Self-Portrait in three objects

Our Year 7 students have been studying the history and forms of still life painting.  We have also investigated the symbolism and meaning conveyed by the subject matter chosen by the artist. During this unit students compared and contrasted the work of modern Australian artist Marion Drew and 17th Century Belgian artist Pieter Claesz.

Students then created their own work, comprising 3 objects: one from when they were a young child; one  from the present and an object they thought they might use in the future. On a table or desk they arranged the objects so they overlapped. Students were able to choose any media to add colour.
