Student Leadership Conference

Generosity, Responsibility, Integrity, People (GRIP)

Student Leaders from Years 7 to 9 attended the GRIP Leadership Conference in Perth on Thursday 12 March. Students participated in a range of activities which focused on the following topics:

  • Setting leadership priorities
  • Generosity
  • Leading exciting events
  • Leading a team of my peers
  • Leading with engaging speeches
  • Leading in positive partnership with teachers

A favourite part of the day for many were the fun “loud noises” sessions which involved interactive games that all students took part in. As well as the workshops, students were given some top leadership tips at the end of the day during a ‘Q & A’ session with the GRIP Leadership presenters.

All agreed it was a fantastic day! We look forward to the Years 7, 8 and 9 Leaders putting all they have learned into action throughout the coming year.

Mock Trials

Round 1 of the 2020 Law Society of Western Australia Mock Trial Competition commenced last Thursday at the Supreme Court. Our team went up against Corpus Christi College - appearing for the Prosecution in a criminal matter involving dangerous driving causing grievous bodily harm. The team persuasively argued that the accused had driven in a manner dangerous to the public - successfully discharging its burden of proof, beyond reasonable doubt.

As we have a number of new team members this year, it was an invaluable learning experience for them to watch our seasoned Year 12s put forward their case. Whilst Mock Trials is certainly a team effort, a special mention has to be made to Isabella Pether - a Year 11 student - who, unfamiliar with court proceedings, took on the role of Barrister 2 and summarised the closing submissions for the Prosecution.

There is a lot of preparation involved in the lead up to the trial, and I would like to take this opportunity to thank the students who, despite their busy schedules, enthusiastically attended lunchtime meetings. I would also like to thank friends and family who came along on the night to offer support.

Our Round 1 Team included:

  • Barrister 1: Reuben Patchett
  • Barrister 2: Isabella Pether
  • Solicitor: Jasmin Collins
  • Witness 1: Ashleigh Smith
  • Witness 2:  Sophie Manners
  • Court Orderly:  Mia Fracaro
  • Reserves: Benjamin Negus, Amalia Olsen, Ella Aquino, Eve Cullity, Rebecca Harsanyi, Skye MacMillan, Gabriel Kaye, Alice O’Sullivan, Will Everett, and James Langton.

Congratulations to our 2020 Mock Trial team on the win.

ACYF Leaders Commissioning Mass and Brunch

Sophie Manners and Roux Korczynskyj attended the Australian Catholic Youth Ministry Leaders Commissioning Mass and Brunch on Saturday March 15.

“At the Youth Leaders Commissioning Mass and Brunch, Roux and I were blessed by Archbishop Costelloe and the  Youth Ministry members along with other student and youth leaders of other Catholic schools and communities of the Perth Archdiocese. Students from schools and parishes across the State attended, and we were able to talk to and get some ideas from them on how to integrate parish, school and community life, as well as how to maintain involvement with the church after students have graduated. Fr George Kolodziej spoke to us about the importance of engaging all areas of religious life; community, school, and parish, and we both came out of the experience with new friends and some new ideas to implement into school and parish life”.

Schools Clean Up Day - Clean Up Australia Day

On Sunday 1 March  the annual Clean Up Australia Day saw thousands of Australians join forces in a national effort to clean up, fix up and conserve our environment. With the Schools Clean Up Day falling on Friday 28 February, it was the perfect opportunity for some eco-conscious John XXIII students to spend a lunchtime cleaning up rubbish and helping to keep our beautiful College surrounds pristine.

Donning the yellow gloves and making the long trek across the vast, green expanse of the playing fields, this group of Years 7, 8, 11 and 12 students really embodied the spirit of service that our College founders would have certainly admired. The results of their effort saw four large garbage bags filled with rubbish and a noticeably tidier corner of our ‘common home’.

National Ride 2 School Day

Last Friday 13 March National Ride 2 School Day took place, a day when school students around Australia are encouraged to swap four wheels for two and ride or walk to school rather than drive. Continuing a tradition started by former Sustainability Coordinator Mr Van Herk, the BBQ was fired up and any riders, scooters or walkers were treated to a bacon and egg roll. With Sustainability Captain Jasmin Collins flipping the bacon masterfully and Mr Mann ably demonstrating his considerable egg frying expertise, the breakfast was well appreciated by the 30 plus student bikers.
