BOYS’ HOCKEY

Last week’s round commenced with the Open team’s Friday evening match against Bulls.  In a fast and closely fought match, the boys ended up on top 4-3. Indeed, for much of the game, we held a two-goal buffer after a brilliant start which saw us score two fine goals in the opening five minutes.  Bulls’ final goal was scored just before the final whistle.

Tom Bunge and Josh Read each snared two goals and provided great drive and run.  Old Collegian Jake Musson and Captain Thomas Verco were two players who provided control, vision and strength.  Jake’s Dad Peter was a tower of strength in defence along with Lachie Holcombe and we were grateful to Stephen Nelson for donning the pads at relatively short notice.

This was a very fine performance in a very good game and the result leaves us well-clear of the field on top of the ladder.  If we continue to play as we did on Friday we can certainly hope to be well in the hunt at season’s end.

The two Under 16 teams met on Saturday morning.  Each was missing a couple of players but the game was, as usual in such intra-school match-ups, fiercely contested.  College Blue won the match 4-1 with goals to Hamish and Archie Carmeron, Ferg Roberts and Eren Zehir.  Jock Adamson bundled the Gold goal across the line under great goalie pressure.  Whilst both teams will plan to play more cohesively as the season develops, there were some excellent moments of team play and some fine individual skills on display.

I continue to be pleased to see the development of the younger players who are adapting to the pace of the Under 16 competition - and was pleased to see the on-field leadership of experienced players such as Tane Nelson, Ferg Roberts, Charles Cain, Dougal Sweeney, Peter Finch and Marcus Munro.

Both teams can look forward to the rest of the season positively.

College Magpies Football Report

We are now three rounds in to the new Hamilton Kangaroos Junior football season, with College Magpies having performed strongly at both under 13 and under 16 levels.  Last weekend saw them playing in Coleraine, where the perfect conditions made for a great day for all who attended.  Coached by Mr Alexander, the under 13s have a record of 1-1 and a bye with standout players in both games.  Coming off a tough loss to St Andrew’s in their first game, there was a hunger amongst the team against Coleraine.  Lachlan Rees dominated the contests with his strength and Michael Crowle was a pillar in defence, while Jack Austin and Christian te Boekhorst were smart across the ground, both kicking a number of goals.  Jake Tonissen, Jock Barrie and Tyler Butcher also contributed in their roles, with a focus being to use the space across the ground to free up opportunities.  This tactic worked well, with hard running up and down the field helping them to a 46 point victory, keeping the opposition goalless.

The under 16s find themselves sitting second on the ladder after 2 wins and a loss.  A win at Coleraine 90-18 on the weekend sees them as a threatening side this season.  Jack Sharp was a major ball winner alongside Magnus Howells and Nick Vallance and they all used the ball well.  Major goal kickers were Sam O'Shannessy and Shaun Roache, kicking 4 and 3 respectively.  Other solid contributors this season have included Nick Gunn, Zac Cunningham and Toby Barrie. They have made a pleasing start that sees them as a genuine contender this season.
