Science

In term one and two the students will be investigating Chemical sciences and Earth and space sciences.  They will be observing the properties of materials such as plastics, metals, fabrics, seeds and other natural and manufactured materials. As well as, daily and seasonal changes in our environment such as night and day and weather patterns that affect everyday life will be covered throughout the semester.

As part of the Science as a human endeavor curriculum strand, students will observe, ask questions about, and describe changes in, objects and events.

Science Inquiry skills that the children will develop are:

  • Posing and responding to questions about familiar objects and events
  • Participation in guided investigations
  • Making observations using the senses
  • Engaging in discussions about observations and representing ideas
  • Sharing observations and ideas in a variety of ways.

Students learn science through inquiry, play and exploration.  The teaching and learning cycle is based upon the Five Es Instructional Model developed by the Biological Sciences Curriculum Study group.  The students:

  • Engage in the intended learning
  • Explore their existing conceptions
  • Explain and clarify the intended learning
  • Elaborate by applying their understanding in new situations and
  • Evaluating their learning.

Physical Education

In Physical Education, our focus for this semester is Moving our body and Being healthy, safe and active. Our Foundation curriculum will provide many opportunities for students to learn through movement. The content enables students to develop and practise fundamental movement skills through active play and structured movement activities. This improves competence and confidence in their movement abilities.

Sports to be covered - Athletics focus, in preparation for our school sports day on Friday April 1st, Soccer (A 4 week clinic will be provided) and modified AFL.

The following dot points will be worked on throughout the Semester;

* Practise fundamental movement skills and movement sequences using different body parts.

* Performing locomotor skills in any direction from one point to another.

* Sending, controlling and receiving objects at different levels and in different ways.

* Creating movement sequences without equipment.

* Identifying ways they can use their strengths to help themselves and others

* Participating in a range of minor games and exploring which ones they enjoy and what makes them enjoyable.

German

In German lessons, students use language in context through familiar routines, games, songs and repetition.  They exchange greetings and information making connections between English and German.  This semester will be an introduction to learning German including the concept of where we are in the world and where German is spoken. There is a high component of oral interaction in our learning experiences.  At our whole school assembly in week 11, the reception children will be presented with a German ‘Schultüte’, a traditional gift received by children when they start school in German.

Please encourage your child(ren) to tell you about what they have been learning in German. See what they can teach you! Can they say Good MorningNight?  What about Goodbye?
