House Public Speaking Final

A sunny afternoon on the Refectory lawn was the setting for the 2019 House Public Speaking Final.  Each House supplied three worthy finalists;

Berry House - Chloe Headlam, Sophie Merrin and Ben Walker

Laidlaw House - Jake Butcher, Sacha Laidlaw and Jock Nicholls

Learmonth House - Izzi Adamson, Harry Brown and Austin Mayfield

Young House - Anna Davidson, George Huf and Ava Schroeder

This year an eclectic mix of topics included endangered black cockatoos, basketballer Stephen Curry, burns victim Turia Pitt, jockey Michelle Payne and the life adventures of a dementia patient.  The Year Six students did a tremendous job of public speaking and the adjudicator Mrs Nerrida Prosser had a tough time selecting a winning speaker and winning House.  As the final went right to the 3:15 pm bell time, the results will be announced at Assembly in Week 9.  Our Year Six students will be in Canberra this week, and will miss the Week 8 Assembly.

Speech Day 2019

Only eight more sleeps until Speech Day.  Next Friday, December 6th sees the Junior School come together to farewell our Year Six classes, celebrate student achievement and enjoy the musical offerings of our talented young pupils.  Academic Excellence, Academic Achievement and Sportsmanship Awards will be presented to students in Years Four to Six.  We will also present a number of special Year Six Awards - Ann Scott Award, Angus Wilson Award, Service to School Community, Year Six Dux, Friends of Performance Arts (formally Music Prize) and Art Prize.  The process for deciding these awards is thorough, and  I hope, transparent. Classroom and Specialist teachers were given the criteria a number of weeks ago and asked to nominate students for consideration. At a meeting last Tuesday afternoon, all staff debated the relative merits of each nominee, and voted for the winning recipients.  Staff with a conflict of interest excused themselves from the process. The awards criteria are as follows;

Dux

The highest achieving Year Six student based on standardised testing and assessment results over the course of the year.

Academic Effort Award

Consistent and significant effort across all areas of study.

Academic Achievement Award

ANN SCOTT PRIZE

Creativity, imagination, leadership and initiative.

Speech Day Dress and Appearance

All Junior students will be required to wear the correct uniform for Speech Day.  It is an important part of our ‘offer’ to our school community and should be a point of difference from other schools.

Blazers for girls and blazers and ties for boys

Correct Junior School socks - white for girls and blue for boys

Cleaned and polished shoes

Shirts with top buttons (a number of students are wearing shirts without top buttons)

Shorts for boys and summer dresses for girls

College coloured hair ribbons for girls

Boys are asked to have their hair in accordance with the College policy - neat and tidy, off the collar and no extreme variations of shaved and cut areas.  Reminder notes will be given out in Week 8 to boys in need of some ‘hair modification’.

Girls are reminded that make up and jewellery must not be worn to school.  They may wear a single pair of plain studs or sleepers.

Berry House Christmas Hamper

A reminder to bring in some items for our Christmas hamper that will be donated to the Uniting Church to help spread a bit of Christmas cheer to families in need. So, when you are next doing your shopping consider putting in something extra that will help to put a smile on someone’s face this Christmas.  Please place donations in hamper box in your classroom.  Year Three are leading the way.  Their box is almost full.  Well done and thank you.  We will deliver our boxes to the Church on the morning of our Nativity.

Bernadette Milich

Deputy Head of Junior School, Head of Berry House

Netball

This Saturday will be the last week of Netball.  Thank you to everyone for showing their sportsmanship this season, especially as we had quite big teams and you may not have had as much court time as you would in a smaller team.

Thank you to Mrs Kelly and Ms Pye, Belle’s mum for coaching the teams.

Thank you also to our umpires Mrs Holcombe from Senior Campus, Mrs Malseed, Isabella’s mum and Mrs Reed, Olivia’s mum.  We wouldn’t be able to play if they didn’t volunteer.

We also appreciate Mrs Brown, Elsie’s mum and Mrs Donovan, Emma’s mum who have given up their time to manage the teams.

And to all our supporters that line the sidelines and cheer us on, thank you.

This week’s finals draw is:

College Jaguars play Dunkeld Rams at 9:30 am on Court 4

13 and Under

College Panthers play St Mary’s Marvels at 10:30 am on Court 5
