Year 6 Camp

Parliament House, Canberra

Five days in Canberra

From Amanda, Year 6 teacher

From Monday 1 March to Friday 5 March, students from our school participated in an educational tour of the national capital. Students were given the opportunity to experience a variety of educational programs with a focus on Australia’s history, culture, heritage, and democracy.

Student Reflections

Last week, all the year six students and teachers headed to a wonderful destination - Canberra, Australia's beautiful and flourishing capital city. Through five days of endless fun, games, and learning opportunities, we all shared extraordinary experiences that we shall never forget.

One brilliant Monday, it was freezing cold like an ice cube and pitch black with shimmering stars in the sky. It was finally here at last; it was time to head to Canberra. My nerves were screaming in excitement, with butterflies flying around my tummy. This is my last camp in primary schoo,l which means I was doubly excited.

You're probably wondering, what's so fun about staring at a bunch of paintings at the National Gallery? Well, first of all, most of the artworks aren't just paintings. In fact, many of them are sculptures and infinity rooms and there's even a memorial! Secondly, the artworks play with your emotions. Most of them caused calmness but quite a few made you sad, happy, or just hurt your head. My point is it was in no way boring!

The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion the Australian Government is contributing funding of $45 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program towards those costs. The rebate is paid directly to the school upon completion of the excursion.
