INTERNATIONAL WOMENS DAY 2021

Kellie Yeow, Community Liaison Officer

Tell us about a joy you have had in leadership?

Supporting and empowering women to find their voice, speak up and see their strengths. Many of us minimize what we do as mothers, colleagues and friends because it’s “just what women do”. But I believe we are not “just women”. We are leaders, we are strong and we can, and are, changing the world for the better. And we can lift other women up as we continue on this journey.

What do I love about my job?

I love getting to know our student community (I’m inspired by their creativity every day), I love getting to know our parent and wider community, what their needs are and how we can become stronger as a whole school through connection. We are such an incredibly lucky school to have so many wonderful parents and carer’s who are so generous with their time, skills and eagerness to help.

Female role model and why?

My female role model is Evonne Goolagong  . Evonne showed determination, drive and believed in herself to fight against the challenges she faced in realizing her dream.  And now she helps others to follow theirs.

Female who has influenced my life?

My Mum. My mother raised my brother and I as a single parent and she worked hard to provide everything we needed for a happy life. My Mum still feels that she “wasn’t enough” and that we “missed out” a lot, but she is wrong. The greatest gift my Mum gave me was the power to believe in myself.

What are your hopes for the future?

My hope for the future is that we move more swiftly towards equality, that we raise the next generation of men and boys to be allies, to stand up and next to women and girls; to call out others when their behavior or language degrades or victimizes.

We can do this! We can be this change. But we need to work together.
