Leader In Me and Student Leadership

With Term One coming to a close, it is a time to reflect on our personal achievements. Our students will begin to look back on their Wildly Important Goals (WIGs) that they set at the beginning of the term and see whether they were successful in achieving both their academic and personal goal. They notice any patterns in their trackers to understand if there is a reason they may not have achieved it YET. At Oakleigh Grammar, we are passionate about the mindset of ‘yet’…‘I haven’t understood it...yet’. This allows our students to build on their growth mindset, have a positive attitude to learning and developing new skills, as well as acknowledging that we can achieve something, it may just take a few tries. This mindset flows perfectly into our School theme of ‘I Can. We Will.’

This term, Preps and Year 1s have learnt Habits 1, 2, 3 and 4, with our Years 2 to 5 revising and building on their prior knowledge of these areas. The first three habits align seamlessly with the beginning of the school year, setting up new routines, being organised and preparing for the learning year ahead. Although these have been reviewed, that does not mean they are forgotten. We constantly need to evaluate and ask ourselves, “Is this the most effective way?”, “Do I need to change up my routines?”, “Is this working?”. Over the year, we assist our students to reflect and acknowledge if something doesn’t work, then make a change. This is part of our teaching and is a life skill. Most commonly, we find ‘road blocks’ in routines around Reflective Study. We support students to develop schedules around after school sports, family commitments and daily life, and find out what will work for them and their family.

Next term, we venture into Habits 5, 6, 7 and 8. These habits delve deeper into an understanding of oneself and how you interact with others.

I wish our families a safe and happy Easter and holiday break. An opportune time to put Habit 7: Sharpen The Saw into action!
