Applied Learning - VCAL / VET

Mr Justin Summons

For students in VCAL and VET 2021 has been a busy start to the year!  The Year 12 VCAL students are entering their last year of school who are working towards demonstrate enough senior learning outcomes to obtain their Senior VCAL Certificate.

There is also the Year 11 VCAL students who are beginning their VET course once a week along with another day at Structured workplace learning (SWL) which allows the students to gain valuable work experience.

The Vision for Applied learning at St John's Regional College is based around the following elements:

  • Knowing the students’ passions to engage them in their learning journey.
  • Accountability for actions. Students know there are expectations of being a member of St John’s Regional College.
  • Employability: The St John’s teacher strives to help our students be the best versions of themselves.
  • “Learning by doing”: making their learning as practical and real-world as possible.

As the school theme for this year is “everything is interconnected” the VCAL students will be attending a camp at Point Leo foreshore in Week 9 of Term 1. The students will be running activities for each other and mentoring the Year 10 Outdoor Education class.

For those who are interested in another ongoing VCAL Project please read a student update from Matthew Cross in Year 12

Lantern Cafe

Hi, I’m Matt from Year 12 VCAL. As a cohort we chose to transform the old uniform shop located at the top of the college into a new Café available for the parents and staff at the College.  So far, we have repainted the building and installed new kitchen facilities. We are currently in communication with Dandenong Council in organising the required permits to serve food and beverages to the College Community.  We will be hoping to open at the beginning of Term 2.  So, come see us and grab a coffee next term!
