Looks like Lent has started early this year with a 5 day lockdown being imposed on Melbournians. Once again, there will be many sacrifices made. We can call to mind Jesus' struggles in the desert, alone, isolated, with minimal food and water, yet gaining all his strength from praying to God the Father. Perhaps we can use this time stuck at home, to spend some time in prayer reflecting with gratitude on the many gifts we have been given. The gifts of life, love, faith and hope. May our minds stay positive during this challenging time and may we call upon God, as Jesus did, to strengthen and support us in our times of need.
Ash Wednesday marks the first day of Lent, a time of dedication to prayer, fasting and Almsgiving. It is a time of contemplation and renewal. Although there will be no services in Melbourne this Wednesday marking ashes on our forehead, let us still be visible signs to others of Jesus' love, compassion and forgiveness. As we begin our Lenten journey let us pray:
God of all peoples and nations,
As you accompany us on our Lenten journey,
May our fasting strengthen our commitment to live in solidarity,
Our almsgiving be an act of Justice, and
Our prayers anchor us in love and compassion.
Through living simply and loving generously,
May we care for our global family and our common home, as we...
"ASPIRE NOT TO HAVE MORE BUT TO BE MORE"
We ask this in Jesus' name
Amen
