Dear Primary families

I wanted to share a wonderful event that took place this week. I had the opportunity to visit the Year 3 and 4 Main Program exhibition at Building 50 RMIT.

The exhibition was titled “Kids Make Change”

The Exhibition was influenced by their recent visit to the NGV.

The students in 3 and 4 chose 5 themes that were marked as important to them.

  • environment,
  • sharing resources
  • no war
  • being healthy
  • respect

All of the themes had a commonality. The students were trying to draw attention to big global issues and problems in the world. The students used different mediums in order to express their concerns around these big issues.

The teachers and students worked with some amazing people from the NGV and RMIT. The curators Kelly Hussey-Smith and David Rousell put together a visual feast. I was so amazed by the level of diversity in the art work and the poignant messaging behind it all. The creativity and level of skill was beyond their years.

The composition of original music, the animation and the sculpture pieces were curated so well and told an amazing story.

I would like to congratulate all involved. Both classroom teachers Meredith and Emma did an amazing job to scaffold the students' learning. The students themselves were outstanding in their delivery and presentation of their artwork. I was so impressed with the calibre of the work.

There will be a reel available to view on Instagram and our college website shortly.

Please enjoy the photos I took on the day.

I thought this was a wonderful way to mark the midpoint of Term 3 and a positive experience to celebrate the arts in a post pandemic time.

Kids Make Change:   3-4 Reggio Art Exhibition at RMIT

Our class has been working on an art exhibition in Project. We called it 'Kids Make Change.' It was inspired by our visit to see the 'We Change the World' exhibition at the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV).

This week we got to install and view our artworks in an exhibition space at RMIT Art School. Our works were connected to themes that we chose as important to us: respect, stop war, sharing resources, the environment and being healthy. We used many different forms of art to express our ideas.

These are some of our thoughts:

Waratah, "I worked with Rafi, Courtney and Mio to make a sculpture of a panda. Our theme was respect so we made a sculpture to respect all animals."

Imala, "The theme for my art work was the environment. I used lots of things from the environment to make my art work. I got lots of inspiration from the exhibition we went to. People had so many ideas that inspired me to make a collage."

Anja, "I worked with Millie to make some music. Our song was about trying to stop people from cutting down trees and taking resources they don't need. We played drums, shaker and we sung. We recorded it on an iPad and edited it. At the exhibition our song was played out on headphones."

Thank you to Kelly and David from RMIT for working with us on this Project. It was amazing to see our art exhibition at a gallery. Thanks to Meredith and Emma for helping us get everything we need and make our art!

One student said it was their best day ever.

Year 3/4 students have been exploring flowers. Students have created beautiful paintings.

As part of their project students have been learning about photography.

Reggio Preps Celebrating 100 Days

The Preps have had their 100th day of school. To celebrate we had a dress-up day and completed 100-day activities. A highlight was counting out 100 fruit loops and making a big necklace. It was a fun day had by all!

Primary Steiner String Orchestra Concert

On Friday 29 July, the Steiner primary classes gave a string orchestra concert to share their wonderful music-making with the school community. It was a delight to hear everyone playing together and to see the students' enthusiasm and enjoyment. Kate's class 5 and Bernice's class 4 started the afternoon with some evocative pieces, some including a drum. Nick and Malory's combined class 6 orchestra demonstrated the wonderful sound an orchestra can make after playing together for many years (despite all those lockdowns!). And the Collingwood Chamber Strings closed the afternoon showing us how much fun it can be to extend yourself in music! A big thank you to all and especially to our dedicated orchestra teacher Naomi Durston.
