Year Four News

Written by the Year Four Team

Dear Year Four Families,

We are officially  finishing Term Four! We have a lot of exciting news to share with the community!

End of the Year Concert

 (ChristmasCarols):

What a joy it was to celebrate with all our students and staff as well as our families by streaming the carols event live! We hope your experience was as memorable as it was  for Saltwater P-9 College student, teacher   community.

Students led conferences: With our Three-Way conferences being a huge success, we thank our families for taking time and appreciating their children’s presentations and learning more about their journey this semester. Students confidently displayed their presentation and communication skills highlighting the works there are most proud of this term.

Camp:

It was such a memorable experience for all participants: students, teachers and parents! The many engaging outdoor activities such as, the flying fox, archery, bush dancing and more  filled the days with lots of excitement. While learning and building resilience and social skills. Well done to all of our students, but a special congratulation goes to those who were at camp for the very first time!

Christmas Doors

The Year Four students are being open-minded and working as a class to decorate their classroom doors and walls for Christmas , getting ready to celebrate the festive season.

Reading

In Reading, students continued to explore the ‘Question-Answer Relationship’ comprehension strategy. This strengthens their ability to identify the key words within the text they are reading to be able to answer questions. Students have been concentrating on inferential and critical thinking using ‘Author and Me’ and ‘On My Own’ strategies.

Mathematics

Over the past fortnight, students continued consolidating their understanding of various areas of measurement and geometry such as, length, mass, volume and capacity. We explored formal units of measurement, using measuring instruments such as, rulers, measuring tape, trundle wheel, measuring cups, jugs, balance scales and scales to estimate and measure different objects. Students used their knowledge of Place Value to convert metric units of measurement.

While exploring the concept of patterns in nature as part of our inquiry, the students used their measuring skills to identify the patterns in earth rotations during the ‘Human Sundial’ experiment. The students  investigate the shade patterns, as patterns are natural events occurring at the same time of the day. They extended their knowledge by  learning how to measure angles with or without technology.

After sitting the General All post -assessments  for Number and Algebra on Essential Assessment students showed exceptional growth for mathematics this year making Year Four Teachers very proud of them all.

Inquiry-Writing

We finished the learning on our Unit of Inquiry Six, ‘How the World Works’ with Central Idea, ‘Patterns may only be evident at a certain time’. Students conducted several experiments with a focus on natural occurrences such as  earth’s rotation, moon phases and water patterns . While going through the steps of the scientific experiment, students extended their knowledge applying their writing skills by using the scientific method as a procedural text.

This was an exciting unit where students were able to reflect on their observations analysing the results of the experiment and discussing the outcomes.

Year Four Teachers thank our families and community for being supportive to all undertakings from the school to enhance students learning experiences this year.
